"Ummmmm Gentlemen lets not be ra-" Shealis murmurs before being cut off by an ear-piercing clang of metal-on-metal.

Bannock, your hammer strikes the wedge and the force reverberates back up your arms with tremendous strength. Rubbing your sore arms, you look beyond Alric's sweat-covered forehead and see that you have left nary a scratch on the case.

Kirio, after realizing that the room has not exploded in fire as a result of Bannock's hammer strike, you regain your composure and recall some relevant information about abjuration spells:

[sblock="what kirio knows"]Although your spellcraft is not sufficient to determine the school of the magic aura, Shealis has already told you its of abjuration. However, given the strength of the magical aura and the school, your knowledge tells you that it is likely a common arcane spell known as Arcane Lock in use here. This spell is generally not used by Bards. Perhaps Arnir has some knowledge he can share.[/sblock]

"!@$#@%# (elven swearing)" Kirio stands up quickly after rolling away, brushing sawdust from his cape, attempting to remain dignified (and failing rather miserably). He cast an evil look at the warrior and shakes his head "I think perhaps you should hold not. From what I can see the abjuration on the case is a spell called Arcane Lock. It is not a spell I know of bards using, and I certainly cannot cast it, but perhaps our friend Arnir can shed some light on the matter and set us on a path forward."

Alric casts Bannock a quizzical look as if addressing a madman who has just asked to borrow Alric's undergarments.

"I think not."

He then removes a flask from his pack and takes a good haul.

Bannock shrugs.

"If you say so. I'm still sure I could get it open with a few more tries though. Far be it from me to take away all your hard work though!"

Loosening up the vices, he puts the tools away and sits on the stack of doors, obviously bored.

Arnir looks on, mouth pursed in contempt at the cavalcade of failure he is witnessing. He rubs the bridge of his nose watching the Dwarf's ham-fisted attempts at chicanery, and looks physically pained as Bannock applies his strength to the case, oblivious to the futility of such an approach. "Imbeciles." he mutters as he makes eye contact with Kirio with a sympathetic expression.

Reaching into his pouch of scrolls, Arnir unwinds a piece of parchment and reads aloud from it. As he does so, each of the runes begins to glow, and lift from the surface of the page. Swirling softly around him, they begin to flow in a stream towards the case as if commanded by Arnir's outstretched hand. The case begins to glow brighter and brighter with each rune until it emits a blinding flash as the last rune is absorbed into it. There is no sound emitted from the case, but you feel confident it is no longer locked.

Arnir looks down rather dejectedly at the now blank scroll. Turning to Shealis he says "Given that we have agreed to share resources, I trust our noble King will have no issue in compensating me for the cost of this scroll..."

After Arnir casts a Knock spell, Shealis approaches the case and hesitantly attempts to open it. The case opens with a soft click and you can see that the lock mechanism contained no mechanical parts - as if a special device or implement was needed to open the case in absence of magic.

Shealis puts her hand in the case and removes a thin leather-bound book and a number of rolled up sheets of parchment. She exhales nervously and smiles at Arnir: "I did say that, and I can offer some funds from what I have available. Given both our parties are likely to benefit from the contents, I'll offer you slightly above half the scroll's market value."

She turns to one of the soldiers and says: "Go upstairs and get our friend 10 pieces of platinum." The soldier salutes, dashes up the stairs and returns a moment later placing the requested amount into Arnir's hand. The coins are minted abroad and you can see the seal of Shahalesti on the currency.

You all now gather around the documents, taking a close look. The book contains maybe 20-30 pages and it appears, after some discussion between Shealis and Arnir, to be written in Infernal. For those of you that are proficient in the language, you note that it is likely a divine subject, however, the specific contents appear to be constructed using a sophisticated cipher as they do not make any sense. The large sheets of parchment are maps and architectural drawings for some sort of underground complex, but like the book, they too contain cryptic notes in infernal.

"Well," says Torrent, "what do we do with this stuff? I'd like to get it to Lyceum as originally intended, but you elves want to take it to Calanis. Is there some way we can compromise or share this unclear information?"

Arnir smiles with genuine surprise and bows graciously "Your generosity is exceeded only by your beauty, my Lady."

Turning to the documents, he attempts to detect any magic on them.

"I would love to learn that trick, Arnir."

Lars approaches and stares curiously at the intelligence. Does it matter whether we bring these to the elves or to the Lyceum? Just as long as whoever has it can use it against the Ragesians, and that we could leave the city quick. Do you know of a safe way to leave, Shealis?"
