Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

An additional set of hooves can now be heard galloping up the road. They sound heavier than the others and beat a more disciplined rhythm upon the road.

You now figure there are about 4 horses en route to your position. Thus far, none can be seen as the road bends to the right.

GM: Kirio, just a few comments: 1) You need to be precise about your spell use. given your use of grease, you need to define the 10ft square its being used in. I'm presuming, based on your post that you want it to fill F11, F12, G11 and G12? 2) You moved to F5 (move action) and then cast a spell (standard action). You cannot then move to E4 in the same round. You need to do your move action or standard action as distinct actions, they can't be broken up (without relevant feats: see shot on the run)

OOC: Assuming Lars has line of sight on the ambusher at K13. I will also assume that he is flat-footed, having heard Lars move about, but not having seen him. If I am wrong, let me know and I will re-submit.

Lars, kneeling in the cold wet snow, aims at the nearby snow-shrouded figure, exhales, and presses the trigger of his crossbow.

Edit: Lars takes a 5-foot step to L9, and tries to get at least partial cover while kneeling.

Lars, your bolt strikes downward. Perhaps its the angle, some snow in your eyes or the wind at this height, but your bolt just narrowly misses your target. The two humanoids, who you can now see as half-orcs bearing now-familiar red armbands, look up at you with menacing eyes.

Torrent clutches her holy symbol and preps her shield as she moves into cover at E4. She rubs the symbol with her hand and speaks divine words:

"I bless us, my friends and allies, in the name of the endless aquatic void. Oh Istishia, stay our fears and give us the courage to strike down these villains!"

GM: The whole party is affected by the Bless spell which grants a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.

[sblock="For Lars"]Lars, you'll need to be at the edge of the cliff if you want to shoot someone right below it, so feel free to edit so you're at L9, 10 or 11. Your stealth check to remain hidden is at a -20 as per the sniping rule which you can see under the Stealth skill. However, horsemen are apparently en route. They don't know you exist so they will do a perception check when they arrive vs. your last stealth check to see if they spot you on the cliff. I'll let you know who sees and does not see you.[/sblock]

Hrimr visibly becomes angered at seeing that they are the same mercenary band that hand been chasing the party since Gate Pass and worse, Half-Orcs.

Hrimr moves directly into the brush by the road and moves past the rocks. To anyone watching it would appear that brush itself moves away from the Dwarf's feet allowing him to pass unhindered. He then begins to spin his sling and then looses a shot at the Orc across the road.

OOC: Movement H3-I3-J4 Attack = +2 (Bab + Dex) +1 Competence Bonus +1 Morale Bonus +1 Racial hatred vs Orcs
The range from J4 should be 45 ft to the Orc at D13

Bannock ignores the crossbowmen in the brush, instead he is far more interested in the thundering hooves he hears approaching. This is what long polearms were made for!

The tired, hooded traveler merely continues to amble slowly forward, to F-4, and readies himself to face oncoming chargers.

OOC: Readying attack on anyone coming down the road into range

GM: This post will take some time to complete, especially because Bannock's readied action has now taken effect.

The second rider's horse is currently laying prone in the grease. On its next turn, it will attempt to stand up. It can still be hurt (if you want to) but is basically a non-combatant. It is large though and can be used as cover.

Lars, all enemies are now aware of your position up on the cliff.

The sounds of horses hooves grow louder and louder and finally, you see three riders come around the bend in the road.

Two of the riders look similar: clad in chainmail and wielding longswords in their free hands. Longbows are strapped to their horses and winter cloaks flap behind them.

The third rider wears black studded leather, and a black helmet decorated with a silver horse’s head. He wields a fine looking composite longbow and as he guides the horse with his knees, he draws an arrow and prepares to fire. A cape billows behind him as he rides, and all you can see of his face is a toothy smile which breaks only to cry out the following: "Find the prize and only take them alive if its possible!" As the words exit his mouth, slows his mount (stopping at F/G 14/15) so not to collide with the fallen horse and he looses an arrow at Torrent. Despite her shield and the cover from the rocks, the arrow strikes her in the shoulder with a meaty thud.

The two riders move down the road first, heading for Kirio and Bannock, swords raised to strike. The first rider plows through Kirio's grease spell without difficulty and heads straight for the elven bard, cutting down with his sword (stopping at F/G 6/7). Bannock's glaive thrusts forward at this point, looking to skewer the rider before he is able to attack Kirio. Bannock's glaive glances off the rider's armor with a metal scrape. The rider looks shocked for a moment, but his attack continues and his blade cuts deep into Kirio's collarbone, splitting flesh and spilling blood.

The second rider does not fare so well. His horse's legs slip on the magical grease and it tumbles to the ground in a heap and a cry. The rider is able to land softly though, turning the momentum into a roll which he bounds out of. Upon seeing the threatening range of Bannock's polearm, the rider moves up the slope (to J5) and slashes his sword at Hrimr, but chops only snowy foliage with his blade.

The half-orc on the left grimaces from a minor bullet wound, steps into the cover of foliage (at D12) and fires his crossbow at Lars on the cliff. The bolt clips the edge of the cliff and scatters away.

The half-orc on the right moves through the brush to take cover by some rocks (at K10). He then aims his crossbow and fires at Bannock, but the bolt is lost in the melee taking place on the road.

Bannock waits until the last possible moment, and then whips his glaive down, braces his feet against the ground and lunges with his whole upper body, driving the point of the glaive forward.
