Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Arnir clips a potion of cure light wounds to his belt and replenishes his supply of rations before readying one of the light horses. After doing so, he steps into the cave to examine the remains of the leather book as well as the contents of the jar the man is holding.

"I wonder what is so special about this jar...or if anything is salvageable from this book."

Arnir, you can tell from the remains of the burnt pages of the book, that it contained arcane writings and designs that clearly mark it as a spell book. Given its condition, there is nothing salvageable.

The jar is empty save for the strip of paper that has the following words written in a messy hand: "Please don't let my death be in vain."

Torrent, who is kneeling next to you, says: "I guess we could prepare his body for the afterlife, but I only know the rights of Istishia and I have no idea what religion this man may have paid homage to. Any thoughts Arnir? Anyone?"

Hrimr grabs the magic torch and walks back to where the party is looking over the body of the frozen man.

"This appears to be a magic torch that burns with no fire, one of you humans should hold onto it as the Elves and I have less trouble seeing in the dark. Lars there is a chest in the large tent. You may want to have a look at it to make sure it is safe."

Hrimr looks down at the frozen man.

"It is a sad fate indeed. Do what you can Torrent, I know a little about the rites of Moradin, but that would do this man no justice."

Hrimr grabs 3 days worth of rations.

Kirio watches with interest as his companions explore the camp. He makes his way to the horses they brought with them, takes and puts on the Black Cloak they took from Renard "Do let me know if anyone else wants this".

"Lars there is a chest in the large tent. You may want to have a look at it to make sure it is safe."

He nods listening to Hrimr, "indeed, I've no talent for traps, finding or setting them, but if you do that chest screams trap to me friend Lars. How are you with them? Traps that is?"

[sblock="for Arnir"]Arnir, man has no visible markings, nor does he possess any effigies or holy symbols. However he is human, and given obvious reasons, he was likely a wizard of some sort. As such, you are aware that he either paid homage to Mystra, the God of Magic, or to Azuth, the God of Spells. Its impossible to know for sure, but the worshipers of Mystra vastly outnumber those of Azuth so its probably more likely that he worshiped the former. Moreover, a temple to Mystra exists in Gate Pass.

Presuming he worships Mystra, you are aware that a cleric merely needs to bless the spirit in Mystra's name and the corpse likely requires the touch of arcane magic (any spell and any level will suffice). The clergy of Mystra believes that this will help the God to locate the spirit in the vastness of the Ethereal Plane where all souls go when they depart their bodies. [/sblock]

After putting on the cloak, Kirio walks over to the horses and picks one out for himself, sorting some of his gear (watershin, rations, etc) onto the horse to lighten his load. A longsword is nice, but was honestly starting to feel a little heavy.

Then, mainly because of a slight feeling of boredom, he shrugs his shoulders, walks over to the large tent, enters kneel before the chest.

He looks it over the best he can despite his lack of expertise; scanning all around, even gently running a dagger along the edge of the lid to see if anything catches before attempting to open it.

OOC: If Kirio does not see anything he tries to open it.

Kirio, you don't find anything on the chest and therefore proceed to open it.

Inside you find a staggeringly large pile of gold coins. After spending a few minutes counting and calculating, you realize that there are 1000 pieces of gold. Additionally, there is also a small pouch with rubies, and four notarized sheets proclaiming they can be redeemed at any Ragesian fort for 100 gp each when accompanied with a captured mage.

Kirio's eyes grow progressively larger as he continues to count the seemingly endless pile of gold coins...
"@$#@^% riiiiiight, that's why I used to run around adventuring all the time. Whoring around Gatepass playing the flute is fun, but not as lucrative"

With more than a little difficulty, Kirio hauls the loot out of the tent and tells the others what he found with a wild grin on his face... "142 each and 6 for the communal pile along with the rubies, what say you???

Arnir is usually rather callous and unsympathetic to the plight of others, but in this man he sees what could have become of him had he not been directed towards Torrent. As a worshiper of Mystra himself he feels compelled to offer this man what moderate send off he can.

"I'd guess this man serves Mystra, the Mother of all Magic, though I have no way to know for certain. Torrent, would you be able to bless this man's spirit?"

Having said that, Arnir casts Prestidigitation on the corpse of the man, warming him slightly in an effort to speed his soul to Mystra.
