Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Arnir snaps to attention having been preoccupied inexplicably for a time. He slings his bow over his shoulder and closes up his cloak to shield against the cold. He raises an eyebrow as Kirio strikes down the two remaining men, but doesn't look the least bit upset or say anything.

"Kirio, you're welcome to the bow. I could never replace my family's bow. Just give me 7 of the arrows or so, I can't really comfortably carry more than 20. Does anyone mind if I take a look at these magical items? Looks as though we may have some things of interest!"

Bannock also suddenly looks up after having spent the entire time during the exchange with Kathor leaning on his glaive with his head down, as if lost in a fantasy.

He inspects the half-plate armour once worn by Kathor.

"Hey! I think this fellow was about my size. If no one objects, I might start wearing it. I think at least one of those arrows that got me would have been turned away if I had this on."

Soon after Kathor dies, Lars' eyes roll back into his skull and he falls to the ground. Torrent runs back over to the group: "Lars! What's wrong?" she says as she kneels by his unconscious form. Perhaps a minute later, the young Rogue's eyes blink open and he stares up at you all with a curious gaze.

Kirio walks over to Lars a look of concern on his face after the young rogue gets up on his feet "That seemed... odd friend Lars, and after Torrent's earlier ministrations, does not seem related to your wound. Are you well enough to continue?"

anyone mind if I take a look at these magical items? Looks as though we may have some things of interest!

Kirio takes the bow looking at the others to make sure no one else objects and then looks expectantly at the younger Elf "I am certainly for learning as much as we can from these items before we proceed. They may prove useful if we end up in yet another fight. This one ended well for us, but it was a close thing at certain points, no?"

Hey! I think this fellow was about my size. If no one objects, I might start wearing it. I think at least one of those arrows that got me would have been turned away if I had this on.

Kirio smiles at the fighter "It would be foolish of you not to given your role in our encounters as far as I am concerned"

"Indeed Lars," says Torrent, "you don't seem to have anything wrong with you and I doubt you've a weak stomach for blood. Is everything alright with you?"

She begins sorting the non-exceptional goods from the ones that Arnir will inspect and loads saddlebags and corrals horses. Alric has calmed the heavy warhorse as well.

"I agree with your breakdown Kirio, lets each pocket 66 gold and maybe keep the rest in reserve. Once Arnir is done, lets push on and follow those tracks Hrimr found. If its a camp, we'll need feed for the horses and anything else we can use."

Arnir nods appreciatively at Torrent as she piles up the items before him. Raising his hands over the goods, he utters a few mystical words in order to detect the aura on the items in question. Having done so, he narrows his eyes and furrows his brow in concentration, trying to determined the extent of the properties each item has.

Arnir, you mentally navigate and translate the magical auras of the items and learn the following:

Studded Leather Armor = +1 Studded Leather Armor (+1 magic bonus to AC);
Black Cloak = Cloak of Resistance +1 (+1 to all saving throws when worn);
1 potion of cure moderate wounds; and,
4 potions of cure light wounds

The following items are a mystery to you and remain unidentified:

Horsehead Helmet;
1 liquid-filled vial from Kathor's belt; and,
1 liquid-filled vial from the belt of a horseman.

GM: The items have all been updated in the group loot document. For those items which you failed to identify, you need to wait until you have put another skill point into Spellcraft before trying again (i.e. when you next level up).

"Nicely done Arnir!"

Kirio looks longingly at the armor and shortword, but then shrugs and says "I know I expressed interest in the shortsword and Armor, but upon reflection, it probably makes more sense for Lars to make use of those, no?" With that he picks up one of the longswords, again looking to make sure no one objects, and places his old longbow on the pile of loot.

Lars picks out the Masterwork Shortsword and the magical studded leather armor for himself, plus he fills out his quiver with extra bolts.

When questioned about his fainting episode, Lars shakes his head, and dismisses the incident as unimportant.

OOC: Can Lars wear the armor right away, or must he have it fitted?

GM: Lars, you can wear the armor right away, no need to resize.

You all can figure out who is using/taking what from the group loot document. I'm presuming that all the loot is packed up in the horses' saddlebags.

Torrent begins to press her point with Lars, but cuts herself off and turns away to finish packing up the gear. Once the horses are ready, some of you grab reins and lead the mounts off in the direction of the tracks.

You all walk for about 150 feet before the road bends to the right and you can see that the tracks lead off onto a narrow game trail. You follow the trail down into a small grotto with several small tunnels carved into the walls. Each cave appears to be locked with a rusted iron gate and is filled with hundreds upon hundreds of clay jars.

The camp of the bounty hunters sits in the middle of the grotto. There are eight light horses, huddled together under blankets, and a half-dozen tents with cold cook fires near them. As you approach, you can see that inside one of the caves, behind an iron gate and amidst the jars, is what appears to be a person sleeping wrapped up in a ragged sheet.

Kirio does not press the issue after the rogue's dismissal. He is obviously a private man, something Kirio respects and understands. Still, he determines to keep a eye on him... something does feel right about the incident.

At the camp:

Kirio scans the surroundings and readies an arrow on his new bow. Seeing the apparently sleeping fellow, he half draws the arrow and attempts to move stealthily up to the gate (5 feet away) to get a better look. As he slowly makes his way forward, he scans the grotto, trying to pick out anything about the cavern (hidden passages, overhangs, the age of the gates), paying particular attention to the gates and jars (trying to remember any stories about local smugglers, or stories of a storage cavern in the vicinity of Gate Pass).
