Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

Kirio, you stalk over to the cave. Although the horses bray slightly at your passage, and you noisily kick some loose scree beneath a patch of snow, the person in the cave doesn't move or even register your presence.

When you get within 5 feet of the gate, you see that it is secured with a large lock (as are the other gates for the other nearby caves). You can also now see that the person beyond the gate is not sleeping, but clearly quite dead. He was a human male, probably middle aged. One eye is open and the other seems to be frozen shut, while frost covers his trimmed goatee. His rigormortis pose shows him clutching the sheet tightly around his body in an attempt to stay warm. In one hand he also holds a small clay jar, a small slip of paper hangs out from under the lid, flapping in the breeze. You can also make out some patterns and designs on the sheet, but you would likely need to get closer to fully inspect it. Under his arm is a gray cat, which also seems to have died from exposure.

[sblock="for Kirio"]Having lived in Gate Pass, you are aware that the citizens of Gate Pass attend large celebrations for the Festival of Dreams (the annual New Year's celebration that is obviously postponed this year). People write small hopes and dreams on slips of paper and place them in clay jars. After the celebration, priests from the various temples take the jars out to special caves. You can infer that this is probably one of the areas where the jars are stored.

The caves and gates do not have any interesting or noteworthy elements about them. Given the rusty state of the iron gates, its probable that they could be broken or bent more easily.[/sblock]

Kirio relaxes his hold on the bow, feeling a little foolish for clumsily sneaking up on a dead man. To the others "Dead, and a dead cat, I hate cats. I think these are wish jars from the Festival of Dreams, you know "I hope little Jürgen recovers from the plague" and all that nonsense. This is where the priests must bring them after the celebration. Would be nice to have a closer look though; he seems rather attached to one jar in particular. Do you think one of you could perhaps pick the lock; or given the state of these gates, force one open? From what I can judge of these gates that would probably be easiest."

"All right, let me try. It's pretty rusted, though."

Lars removes a bundle from inside his belt, and meticulously unwraps a set of longish metal tools. He chooses two of them and starts fiddling with the lock.

OOC: Take 20 (+6) Skill check of 26.

Lars, after a couple of minutes of tinkering, the lock snaps open with an audible click. You easily remove it and have no trouble opening the gate.

Lars clicks his tongue in satisfaction and gestures to Kirio that the path is clear. Lars then spends a few moments cleaning and putting away his tools.

Hrimr looks at the poor frozen man and wonders what would possess someone to sleep in these caves so unprepared. He decides to have a look around the cave and camp to see if he finds anything of interest.

Up close, you can see that its unlikely the dead man was locked in a cave due to his own free will, as his feet are tightly bound with rope. A small pile of burned detritus sits nearby, including the ashen remains of a leather-bound book, paper, hay and some twigs. The sheet wrapped around his body is made from silk and is covered in faded images of old myths of the city of Gate Pass such as a great eagle battling a dragon.

Hrimr, you look around camp for a few minutes and find the following things of interest:

Six tents, each with a bedroll and winter blanket inside, about 20 days worth of rations (dried meat and fruit) and some mundane daggers and long swords. Over by the corralled horses are a few sacks of oats for horse feed. You figure that you could probably squeeze 3 or 4 days worth of food for 7 horses. There are also saddles, bit and bridles, saddlebags, etc.

In the largest tent sits an unlocked wooden chest. Additionally, sitting on the bedroll is a burning torch. However, you can detect no heat from the fire and no smoke is released. Indeed, even the bedroll bears no scorch marks.

Hrimr notices this odd torch and believes it is probably magical. To confirm he casts Detect Magic and uses the spell to check the torch and the rest of the tent.

OOC: Since I have no spellcraft I'm just going to pick out what is magical.

Alric takes a couple days of rations and adds it to his pack. He then takes his share of horse feed for his heavy warhorse. "These horses are a boon! If anyone needs help saddling their horse and preparing for the journey I will assist. Only 3 to 4 days of feed, but they should get us to the burning forest faster."

Alric regards the frozen corpse upon the ground dispassionately for a moment. "Poor bastard. Not the way to die I wish. A mage prisoner of the black horse company?"

Hrimr, the torch is indeed magical. Nothing else in the tent registers an aura.

Torrent walks over to the cave: "That's what it looks like to me Alric. Poor soul."
