Six From Gate Pass - A War of the Burning Sky Campaign (3.5)

"The passport is in my saddle bags. You can help yourself to it at your leisure since you now own all my possessions. I'm not sure what good it will do you thought since you're not me." Kathor is shivering fairly seriously at this point, "I have no relation to Renard beyond my week long association with his band of bounty hunters. I fled Ragesia after my Emperor was slain and Leska the usurper assumed the throne. I met up with Renard in Gate Pass and they were impressed with my experience in the Ragesian cavalry ... as well as my other talents. There really is nothing more to the story. So listen, I'm cooperating and could really use a blanket or something. If you want me to die, could you at least run a dagger across my throat? I'd rather perish on my feet than freezing to death in a fetal position.

Lars ignores the man and signals to the others. "Can we talk?"

When they are out of range of Kathor, Lars says, "Do you really want to let him go? I know you gave him your word, Hrimr and Alric, but I don't believe him, and he will inform his superiors in the Ragesian army or whatever group he is reporting to. They will come after us, you can be sure of that, if they are ready to pay 10,000 gp for the case. Heck, I'm tempted to turn myself in. I vote he dies."

Alric scowls at Lars in disappointment. "Why do you doubt his words? There are many from my homeland who owe allegiance to Coaltongue but not the High Inquisitor and who left for a life of mercenary work. I am one of these. Do you doubt my allegiance as well? If you must kill him because you do not believe his word then you must kill me as well, for the only assurance that I will not turn you in to the Ragesians for 10k gold pieces is my word."

"I would kill a man for many things, but this is cold-blooded murder. He is unarmed, has capitulated with honor and even if he does tell the Ragesians the way they can find us, we now have horse, 2 days head start and soon will have a burning forest between us and them. He himself is no threat to us, he has nothing, no armaments, no money, except what we give him out of mercy." Alric becomes excited for a moment, "Moreover think of the message his defeat will convey. We were formidable enough to defeat his entire troupe! That would give our enemies pause and rally men to our sides! I say Let him tell the Ragesians were we be! We will cut them down just as surely and mount more glory upon our names! Instead if we were to kill him, we would have a reputation of cutthroats who would fear a man unarmed and naked in the cold because we fear he might tell our enemies 'they went thattaway'." Alric regards Lars for a moment, wondering if he has ever killed a man in cold-blood. Then believes he has said enough. "Sate your fear and paranoia with blood if you will, I will have none of it." Alric slams his bastard sword home to his scabbard to punctuate his point.

Alric then goes over to one of the cantering horses and attempts to dig out a couple of winter blankets from their saddle-bags to give to the defeated men.

Kirio sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose as he listens to Alric spout on about honour and blood… He focuses on Alric and Hrmir, fixing them with a cold stare that seems to reflect his 214 years “look, I respect you, because you are honest men who say and do what they mean. Know that. You think they will fear us because we defeated these men? They have Red Dragons at their beck and call. They will either send more, or not, and what we do here and now matters not in the least. What does matter is that this is not a helpless man, and he is the direct cause of our troubles these last three days. Letting one naked thug run free in a city under siege is one thing, and I was happy to be able to do it. This is another thing altogether. So… know that I am doing this, not you, and that it is without your sanction. Your word is in no way broken. I must live with this, most likely longer than you will!”

With that he swiftly turns towards the prisoners, raises his bow (you did not even notice him ready it) and lets fly two arrows in quick succession. At this close range they fly straight and true, catching each man in the heart, knocking them onto their backs with the force of the impact. They are both dead before hitting the ground, a mildly surprised expression on their faces.

Kirio does not look at the others as he walks from corpse to corpse, coldly and quickly searching them, collecting useful finds for the party.

Torrent dashes over to the rapidly cooling bodies of Kathor and the half-orc scout. With surprise on her face she inspects the wounds and gazes into their lifeless eyes. Slowly she rises, collects her thoughts and speaks: "They are dead. At least they died quickly ... I um ... I think they probably would have died of exposure anyway. I don't know how comfortable I am with what just happened, but I can see both sides of the coin. On the one hand, we have murdered prisoners. On the other, there was no telling whether or not Kathor would have continued to haunt us. I just don't know. Im conflicted."

Soon after Kathor dies, Lars' eyes roll back into his skull and he falls to the ground. Torrent runs back over to the group: "Lars! What's wrong?" she says as she kneels by his unconscious form. Perhaps a minute later, the young Rogue's eyes blink open and he stares up at you all with a curious gaze.

[sblock="For Lars"]Lars, as you watch Kathor die, you see an almost ethereal dragon-shaped emanation stream out of his mouth with his final breath. Its eyes glow briefly before being blown away to nothingness in the breeze. Before you can blink your eyes to determine if you are seeing things, you black out. You are assaulted by visions, highly similar to those in your dreams which have never been this intense. After what seems like an eternity, you hear a woman's voice and your eyes snap open.[/sblock]

Kirio, you assemble the following useful items found on the bodies and in the packs/saddlebags of your enemies (there are also 4 warhorses - 3 light and 1 heavy):

Kathor - Masterwork Greatsword, Masterwork Shortsword, Half-Plate, 350gp, 2 liquid-filled vials.

Renard - Masterwork Longbow, 40 arrows, Masterwork Black Studded Leather Armor, Black Cloak, Horse-head Helmet, 1 liquid-filled vial, 40gp

Horsemen - 2 longswords, 2 longbows (+2 Strength bonus to damage - need at least 14 strength to use), 40 arrows, 36gp, 4 liquid-filled vials.

Scouts - 2 saps, 2 morningstars, 2 light crossbows, 20 bolts, 10gp.

After inspecting the loot, Kirio casts detect magic on the lot to try and identify any "special" items.

He splits the arrows with Arnir, and asks "do you mind if I take the Masterwork Longbow, yours already seems... better?"

Kirio also voices interest in the Masterwork Black Studded Leather Armor and the Masterwork shortsword, but as he is not a "front line" type, is willing to give these up.

Kirio, the following items possess a magical aura: all 7 of the liquid-filled vials, the black cloak, the black studded leather armor, and the horse-head helmet.

GM: If you want to identify the items, a character with ranks in Spellcraft is required to cast detect magic and then perform a Spellcraft check for each item. The DC for each item is usually different since its 15 + the caster level of the item.

Hrimr shakes his head at the needless slaughter. True they were enemies, but they did surrender and should have been afforded some decency and honour.

"You have no honour elf. You killed two defenseless men in cold blood. We should have shown them the mercy we could only hope for if we were in a similar position. I want nothing of their possessions, they are stained with innocent blood."

He then walks away from the group and looks around to see if the crow is still there.

Kirio shrugs at the dwarf's words...

"There is also the matter of the 400 GP. I suggest we split it evenly six ways as Hrimr is forgoing his share, say 66 each, gamble for the remaining four around the campfire?"

"Cowardly..." Alric mutters under his breath shaking his head. He sheds no tears for Kathor, though some part of him believes he deserved to die with a sword in his hand. Alric muses that he has some idea how the elf survived 214 years, though wonders why he has not suffered from the vengeance of the associates of those he has killed.
No matter from this point, bickering will only sow dissent and we have a long road ahead. But I will keep an eye on this unpredictable Kirio...

Alric then walks towards Kathor's warhorse and tries to calm the animal.

OOC: Does anyone mind if I take the heavy warhorse?
