The changes push the balance between stats around but frankly this is not something I'm terribly concerned about. So Int is not useful for most builds. I don't think this is much of a problem. It definitely is not a rules issue that is hindering play in any form. It's mere rules perfectionism. Changing this causes a lot of work and rewrites, but it does not improve the game experience in any form.
In fact, I'm not even sure that Int will stay a dump stat with further editions. We may very well see some fighter build options based on Intelligence in one of the next books and similar stuff.
I'm actually a fan of the "pick 3 important stats, ignore the rest" rule, but for entirely different reasons: Monster design.
Most monsters, especially animals and beasts, have low Int and Cha. In the old edition, that meant low skill points and all kind of other weird consequences. In the new edition, it just means they use Dex and Wis for their defenses instead. So you can give monsters "natural" stats without worrying about effects with their combat abilities.
