Skill Trick once per Encounter

In Complete Scoundrel it says "a character can use a skill trick once per encounter".

Did the author mean "a character can use a given skill trick once per encounter"?

Wish they had time for playtesting and editing over there at WotC...

Those who like those skill tricks will say each can be used once per encounter, those who dislike them will say only one trick per encounter.

I guess I was assuming that you could only use a given trick once per encounter because no-one is going to fall for the same trick twice. But if you flip over someone for a backstab, I don't think that would really put them on their guard for disguised spell casting or improved healing check. The tricks are so different that it would seem odd for them to be on the same timer.

Grammatically, "a character can use a skill trick once per encounter" can be read to mean that only one trick total (of any sort) can be used in an encounter. Of course, it could also be read to mean only one character (of all those present) can use a skill trick in an encounter. That seems really unlikely so I'd assume it means each character can use a trick and by the same token I'd assume it means a character can use each trick.

And those who don't like them will use emotionally loaded language to sidetrack the discussion.

Don't like a rule? No problem, start your own thread. But don't threadcrap, please.

And on topic, it seemed pretty unambiguous to me that it was once per encounter for each skill trick.

Sorry!

And back on topic, I'd agree with your closing statement.

That's a non-problem. The encounter is over when you've spent a minute not fighting anybody.

A whole minute? 10 rounds of glaring finishes the encounter for me, whether or not my friends are fighting? Interesting...
