SKR fractional spellcasting progression

What do you think of his proposal ?

Would you use it, do you use something similar ?

I've used +1 Caster level / +1 spellcasting progression as a fractionning before, but I
like SKR's idea.

But I don't think it's sensible to do 1/3 progression. Can you imagine the player asking this :

"I've taken 1 level of X that gave me 1/2 spell casting level, plus 1 level of Y that gave me 1/3 spell casting level. What's my
spell table now ? "
(of course you could answer "round down" but that would be against the spirit
of the fractional progression)

I don't see much difference between this and gaining the +1 spellcaster every other level....It simply spreads it out a bit over the levels, and who would want to end up with a 1/2 spellcaster level?!?!

I agree that 1/3 spellcaster progression doesn't seem sensible.

1/2 spellcaster progression instead of 1 spellcaster progression per two levels seems to give a slight advantage but a potentially worthwhile one. It would take some of the sting out of excessively backloaded prestige classes (Spellswords, for instance, for all that they're supposed to be fighter/mages don't get any better at either fighting or casting spells at level one and don't even gain the arcane spell failure reduction. A ftr 2/Wiz 5/Spellsword 1 is effectively a ftr 2/wiz 5 with a few extra hit points and better fort and will saves.)

I think it's nicer for the player to have a small gain every level than to have to wait two levels. It's sad that some levels can be considered worthless in some classes with
half progression. I agree that the spellsword is a good example.

Another plus of this method is that I will
probably allow some PrC that I disallowed before, simply by giving them 1/2 spellcasting levels at some levels (i.e. 1, 2, 4, 5) instead of the +1 progression they had initially.

The main drawback is the creation of new tables.
