Sleeper RPG's

Gear Krieg. I nearly forgot Gear Krieg. I bought all of the books and minis for the RPG and its companion wargames (yes, there were multiple wargames) and I think I played it all of once. :( The setting had a lot of potential for Indiana Jones-ish adventure.

I'm still a little miffed that I could never find anybody interested in playing it. I think it was a sign of the times, though, as there weren't too many locals playing non-TSR or non-White Wolf games. I recall the FLGS putting a freeze on orders for products from other publishers at the time.

We'll be playing a couple of sessions of Gear Kreig week after next.

It's a good game. I hear that the second edition (which is technically just a sourcebook for SilCore) is cleaned up a lot of the editing errors in the first edition.

I wouldn't know, I am just a player and bought the PDF to have the rules I needed on hand. The guy running it has a bunch of the books, etc... We've played 4 or 5 sessions, and the next times we play will be to wrap up the whole scenario. I know I don't like the d6 skill system when you only have 1d6, and its supposed to be something your trained in. Failing 1/6th of the time at something your supposed to be basically skilled/knowledgeable in breaks my ability to dis/believe, verisimilitude, whatever you wish to call it. Now when it gets to 2d6, or better, then it works a lot better for me.

I think 1d6 should work fine if you're not rolling for every darned thing, which I don't like anyway. That 83.33% is almost 85%, or 4+ on 1d20. One might get better odds sometimes in D&D, but I should think not often.

Well the 1d6 even came up frequently in combat. So doing a critical failure that often in combat isn't good. We managed to live anyways, but it was certainly frustrating. It was also frustrating for mechanics checks and similar. The good thing is once you earn that 2nd d6 you get very noticeably better at doing things.

So I guess 1d6 can be looked at as being an apprentice, where your still learning and screwing up a lot, and 2d6 is when you actually become proficient. That may be the way the rule book explains it too, I haven't looked. I just know in play only having 1d6 was very frustrating at critical times.

Amber Diceless RPG is awesome. Models it's subject very well and was rather revolutionary.

Universalis is an RPG of collective storytelling (no GM) that's really something different. (In some ways it almost feels like your a bunch of creative talents brainstorming for your next hit film TV series, because the game can be pretty much anything.)

Just how asleep does it need to be to be a sleeper? Someone out there will consider virtually everygame out there that's not D&D or World of Darkness a sleeper RPG.
Personally I don't think Serenity is, but what to I know. I've heard that AMber had a pretty active following but I've never run into it.

hmm why is this all in italics now?

I can think of a lot of games that don't receive their necessary due, though I don't think they fit into my idea of what is meant by a sleeper.

I'm a huge fan of anything and everything that came out of R. Talsorian Games in its heyday - specifically Mekton, Teenagers from Outer Space, Cyberpunk and Castle Falkenstein. Ah, Falkenstein. A game so ahead of its time and so largely ignored its a darn shame.

Mayfair's James Bond 007 game was surprising good, with excellent detail and source material. I'm not a big fan of spy or espionage games and I still thought this game was really good.

Ars Magica is an awesome game that really doesn't get as much love as it should. That game is fantastic and actually makes this scifi gamer want to run fantasty.

Of course, my favorite sadly gone game is Star Trek (FASA & LUG). Hey CBS, there's a new movie and an MMO coming...would it kill ya to license a Star Trek RPG? Pleeease! I'll be you're best friend...
