Sleight of Hand on Spell Component Pouches

Actually, I'm glad this thread got necro'd, it's an interesting topic and reading it left me wondering something...

Yes, it's in the Dragon Compendium and proves that you can use Sleight of Hand in combat.

Benefit: While engaged in combat, you may attempt to use the Sleight of Hand skill to pickpocket an enemy without provoking an attack of opportunity...

Normal: Using Sleight of Hand in melee provokes an attack of opportunity.

So yes, Sleight of Combat works just fine in combat. If you are playing a spellcaster I suggest bringing backup pouches and divine foci.

Accepting that you can use sleight of hand in combat, even without that cutpurse feat, should something be made of this rule from the Concentration skill?
Concentration :: d20srd.org
"You can use Concentration to cast a spell, use a spell-like ability, or use a skill defensively, so as to avoid attacks of opportunity altogether. This doesn’t apply to other actions that might provoke attacks of opportunity.

The DC of the check is 15 (plus the spell’s level, if casting a spell or using a spell-like ability defensively). If the Concentration check succeeds, you may attempt the action normally without provoking any attacks of opportunity. A successful Concentration check still doesn’t allow you to take 10 on another check if you are in a stressful situation; you must make the check normally. If the Concentration check fails, the related action also automatically fails (with any appropriate ramifications), and the action is wasted, just as if your concentration had been disrupted by a distraction. "

So...for a flat DC of 15, could you not only pickpocket things in combat, but also "steal defensively" without a feat cost? :)

You could be like Thief from 8-bit theater, who can even steal people's souls and prestige classes from his future self.

Possible defenses?
1) Multiple pouches. If your opponent needs to spend four standard actions to disarm you in this manner, you get three chances to slaughter him before he can finish. Assuming all the spells you have ready rely on you having your spell components pouch.
2) Invisibility - it can be made Permanent on objects. And you can make See Invisibility permanent for yourself (after 10th or 11th level, costs 1,000 xp for you, 1,000 xp for your pouch).

It looks that way. I'm not sure if I like it being that easy, but there it is.

3) Mentioned above - take the stuff out of the pouch and put it in pockets.

It's harder to access in pockets, I believe.

There's a few other options.

# Eschew Materials feat
# Destroy him with a spell that does not require material components.

The problem with that, and Slight of Hand yourself to hide it, being that you potentially lose the benefits of a spell components pouch - namely, the free action to draw components out of it.

That's not a benefit provided by a spell component pouch. All material spell components work that way.
