Sling Stones?

Not any random pebble will work well as a sling stone, after all ...

Actually, according to the rules, any random pebble will work well as a sling stone. It has the above-listed effects.

House Rules, generally speaking, do not belong in this forum.

Not really, no.

We agree that a sling stone is -1 to hit and does damage as one category smaller when compared to a bullet. We disagree on what qualifies as 'an ordinary stone' to use as sling ammunition. You say it's any rock you can pick up off the ground in one hand, I say it needs to be a particular size and general shape, and that if it's not, it falls under the EXISTING, WRITTEN rules for improvised weapons:

Improvised Weapons

Sometimes objects not crafted to be weapons nonetheless see use in combat. Because such objects are not designed for this use, any creature that uses one in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a -4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object.

So, let's just play nice.

In other words, to you, "an ordinary stone" is not "an ordinary stone," it's "a properly shaped stone."

If they really, really meant "properly shaped stone," don't you think that's what the rules would say?

Really, now. I know we're talking about RAW, but there's an assumption of common sense. Just because it says 'ordinary stone' without qualification, doesn't mean a strict DM is obligated to let a PC use a twenty-pound boulder or a half-ounce pebble as effective sling ammunition. There's a judgment call for the DM to make about which 'ordinary stones' qualify, and it's a perfectly reasonable judgment to make that it's not that easy to find suitable ones.
