Regarding slings, dex, and str--let me see if I have this correct--

I get my dex modifier added to my attack. If I have a strength
penalty, I subtract that from my attack. I get my str modifier to my
damage (melee or thrown weapon). Is this right? I want to be sure I'm
interpreting the Str and Dex parts of the PHB correctly.

You don't add your Str to your attack roll for ranged weapons, only Dex. I believe you add only a Str penalty to damage - no bonus for high Str for fired weapons.

Correct.

Incorrect. Only apply dex for all ranged attack rolls.

It is correct for melee and thrown weapons. A sling is not a thrown weapon, but a projectile weapon. Therefore, you do not add your strength bonus to damage with a sling. You do, however, apply a strength penalty to damage with a sling. This is the same for bows, too.
