slow vs. boots of speed

I would rule that it cancelled all the remaining haste magic in the boots for the day, otherwise a cheap means of gaining "haste" becomes virtually immune to the main counter to it.

I think I might agree with you, but it would have to depend on the duration of the slow spell. Since both spells are 3rd level and have the same duration contingency (1 round/level). I would have to say that if the duration of the slow spell out wieghed the haste spells duration, then yes I would agree with you. But, if the slow spells duration did not out wiegh the duration of the haste then the haste spells durationis only down the difference between the two durations.

ie: Take Johnny the 5th level wizard, and Sammy the 5th level wizard. These two are in a trial duel. Johnny casts haste on himself. So, Sammy casts slow to counter Johnny's haste. It counters perfectly. Lets raise Johnny's level to 8th and leave Sammy's where it is. Same situation Johnny casts haste on himself, and Sammy cast slow to counter it. Well, this time Johnny will still be hasted, but for only 3 rounds. The difference between the two duration times. Sammy has effectively reduced the duration of Johnny's spell.

I might be wrong on this assumption, but it sure sounds good in my head. Well, everything does...

Duration doesn't matter as far as the spells are concerned. Slow counters and/or dispells haste and haste counter and/or dispells slow - they do not overlay.
