Slowly showing the map - Does this software exist?

One of the features of Fantasy Grounds is the ability load a map of a dungeon and slowly present parts of it to players as they make their way through said dungeon.

Is there any other program out there that does this? I know Interactive Dungeon does something similar but it doesn't do what I need it to. I simply want to be able to uncover parts of the map as my players walk around.

KloogeWerks is nice but $40 for a Master and Client license is steep. I run a tabletop PnP game so what I'm picturing is a monitor, hooked up to my laptop (dual monitor setup), for my players to view where they are in the dungeon. To do that, I would have to buy a Master license and Client license and run 2 copies of KloogeWerks, one on my screen (Master) and one on their screen (Client).

I agree $40 is a bit steep when all you are looking for is a utility to hide/reveal a map. I'm in the same position as you...I'm looking for an app I can use to project a map to a monitor (or tabletop via a projector) and reveal sections of the map as needed. But, if you go with Fantasy Grounds, you'd be paying $35 for the full (GM) license and another $20 for a lite (Players) license to display the 'revealed' map to the players (or can you run two instances of Fantasy Ground on the same box?). I have tested the demo version of KloogeWerks (Fantasy Ground is scheduling a demo release for this week) and I haven't been overly impressed thus far. I really like the feature list, but the performance of the app is hit or miss (a common complaint of Jave bytecode vs native code). I'd like to run the demo version of Fantasy Ground and see what the interface is like before making further comparisons...

There used to be a freeware program posted on EnWorld called MapView that was created by Gravyboat. I'm sure it's around somewhere still if you want to search.

If I recall my brief trial it used java and image files like .jpg to hide portions of a map and reveal areas as set up by the GM. It was simplistic but it served its purpose well.

Fargoth, I officially dub thee my new hero! (Feel free to put that on your business card) ;)

Glad I could be of assistance! Let me know how the program works for you. I'm interested in finding out if it works well when actually used while gaming.

Any graphics program that supports layers (like, say, the Gimp, which is FREE: www.gimp.org) will let you do this. Just put each room on a separate layer, make them all invisible to start and reveal each layer as your players explore. Or, in the opposite direction, create a "blanket" layer for each room to cover them -- if they're all just fills of the same colour they'll look like a uniform piece, and then you make them invisible as the party moves through the map. You don't need to spend any money at all.
