So how many monsters are there?

As an aside to my indexing efforts, there are currently 7832 distinct creatures in the index. Factor in another thousand (at most) from the pages of Dragon, and a bunch more from original D&D sources, and my current estimate is that there have been a total of between 9000 and 10000 different D&D creatures published since the beginning.

3.X statistics exist for about 90% of these creatures, so relatively speaking, there aren't so many left to convert  .

WOW! Not surprising, but still quite impressive to see it.

If you limit the statistics to WotC only updates, I'll bet it's closer to 50-60%. That's why MMV and beyond need more updated critters. ;)

yah, good point... there are at least hundreds, if not thousands, of unconverted critters out there. ;)

Many of the monsters are redundant, especially with animals, elementals, golems etc. There are only so many animal forms you can think of, after all.

well, really, the same holds true for any creature type. :) it's just that some take more thought than others because of the nature of one type vs. another... :)
