So, I gotta make a lvl 15 Christmas elf

Thrown Weapons:
Any magic light thrown or heavy thrown weapon, from the lowly +1 shuriken to a +6 perfect hunter’s spear, automatically returns to its wielder’s hand after a ranged attack with the weapon is resolved.

And for what it is worth, I never liked the rule but it is clear as day.

I'm with you on not liking the rule, it makes absolutely no sense. You ever see those velcro bracelets that have a telephone cordesque thing attaching them that you're supposed to attach to yourself and your child? They're to keep you from losing your kid in a crowd. I'm going to insist that the DM approve me having two of those on each wrist attached to my knives so that it makes sense roleplaying wise.

Well, if they don't return, who is going to throw one of their top 4 expensive magic items at an enemy - ever? The rule is there to mitigate that risk a bit.

If the "inherent bonus" rule is in effect, and cheap normal daggers can be thrown and act as +3 weapons, then the return mechanic can safely be removed.

Those elastic things make no sense at all -- you really think a knife's going to fly right that way?

Just have a magic sack that makes temporary +3 daggers of a particular flavor, or a magic bandolier of throwing knives that cannot be permanently separated from their holder and which never empties, or throw candy canes which turn into daggers when you throw them due to your magic bracelet. Or just have a knife that magically returns when you call it--after all, returning thrown weapons are very appropriate to a northerly campaign (note the ultimate returning weapon -- Mjolnir).
