So I had a TPK-- help me reboot.

I think that´s pretty harsh to have people cdg:ed av lvl 3, and even more if they are newbies!
I find it amazing that they still want to play.

And the alternative is what? Let them cakewalk through superior forces, compounding rather than learning from their mistakes?

Capture them? Most players would rather die.

I'm more likely to walk away from a game that molly-coddles the PCs than challenges them.

What's the point to playing a game that's no risk and all reward?

Trust me - dying in your first game is not an indicator of lack of return play. :) My first AD&D PC was an elf who was worthless at everything he did, and died in his second game. I wanted to keep playing more than ever. And my first D&D game I DM'ed and killed off the whole party. They jumped right back in. It's the nature of the beast.

What does cdg:ed mean?

Anyhow, I see a conflict.

On the one hand, your'e allowing for some fairly harsh gameplay, with your description of the goblin battle. Which is fine.

On the other hand, you are primarily focused on these big 'high definition/big flavor' settings. Which is also fine.

But the two styles don't seem to mix that well. Also, you end up having to rely on third party guys for your encounters and that can cause problems, maybe.

Why not give them something low-def like a homebuilt dungeon with a town nearby, and then build up the def over time?

I'd go with Banewarrens in Sharn. Seems like it'd be easy enough to fit it in, and if you already know Banewarrens, that gives you time to "Eberron" up the game as you continue. Then, after a few sessions, you can get a little bit more into the setting elements of Eberron that really set it apart; warforged moral quandries, lightning rails to lots of different locations, dragonmarked politics, etc.

Eh, as a new player I had four PCs die in four consecutive game sessions. You learn what to do so it stops happening.

At least these players will never underestimate goblins.

I'm guessing "coup de grace-ed," which is such a horrible mangling of the language that I have to go bang my head against a hard surface know.

*BONK!* Ow! *BONK!* Ow! *BONK!* Ow!

So, Wulf, what did you end up doing?

Back to basic D&D, back to Barakus. They are all interested in Eberron, but still somewhat new to the game and not ready for additional options.

The dwarven druid became a half-orc cleric of Kord with a 2-handed sword. (Spent a feat on weapon proficiency!) 6 Intelligence. Likes scouting ahead. "I FOUND A ROOOOOM!"

The female sword-and-board human paladin is now playing a female gnome sorcerer. She's not used to staying in the back after playing a Cleave-oriented combat machine for so long.

The elven "frenzy variant" barbarian with two weapon style is now playing a human fighter with a two-handed sword. (The FIVE feats available to this 3rd level fighter were almost overwhelming...)

The got themselves into almost the same pickle last night when they captured an orcish prisoner and demanded he take them to his lair. Which he did... Speaking "cooperatively," but loudly, the whole time... So his 15 buddies and their dire wolf were ready and waiting when he led the PCs into a dead end...

It got ugly again, the fighter dipped into negative hit points, but this time around the arcane caster made a huge difference (burning hands and a wand of sleep...) as did more favorable terrain (a narrow passage where the orcs had to back off or attack one at a time).

They are going to miss the loss of their rogue companion, so I am trying to fill that player slot.
