So, I rolled 5 18s

For those of you telling stories about players rolling a set of stats and then having them reduced to be fair to the other players, a question?

Why the heck are you rolling for stats if you wont accept the outcomes.

I mean thats like saying gee bill thats the 10th 20 you've rolled this evening why don't we make it say a 15 so the other players get a chance to shine in this game too.

Silly silly IMO.

Why roll dice at all lets just give everyone the same set of numbers for each session and let them tic them off in the order they want that is true fairness.

And boring as all get out too. (Just like point buy IMO)

Anything is possible I did once role 5 18's for a game in front of the DM but the DM nerfed it saying the stats were to good and had to balance more with the other players cutting me down to 2 18's. This is with 4d6 minus the lowest. I can understand his point but always use point based buys now its a long time since I have roled a character.

I have also had an elf with 17 or 18 for all stats but one which was a 3 the dm did let me play that one though curse all threes.

You do need to role in front of people though.

Heh, I did as well, and I was the one who nerfed it. The DM had the World's Stupidest Way of Rolling Stats (tm) - roll 5d6, drop the lowest two, reroll 1s until they are no longer 1s... The other PCs were almost as bad, and they also turned them down. The game did not run for very long.

This is pretty close to my objections with rolliing stats, in practice. However, my experience comes from the other direction.

In my experience players regularly have complained about having too low stats. Most don't want to keep low stats. Sure, the current system has a level where you reroll below it. But watch players roll characters that are right above that level and see how many are really willing to play it. Sure, they exist (and there is probably a higher concentration of them on these forums), but there aren't many of them who will do it and feel good about it.

Look at the recent threads along the lines of "I rolled these horrible stats, what should I do?" A large percentage of the players here recommended two paths; pressure the DM into allowing a reroll, or play the character and do so in a way to get it killed as soon as possible.

To that I say the same as you; "why the heck are you rolling for stats if you won't accept the outcome?" I believe that most players overall are doing it because they are just hoping for a "jackpot." They roll hoping for the roll the original poster here was looking for, 5 18's. Many of those players expect to be able to pressure the DM into allowing them reroll the poor characters, instead of taking the back side of looking for the jackpot.

My solution isn't the same as yours. You believe in rolling and keeping what you roll. My experience says that most players don't want to do that. That's what I like about point buy. No "jackpots," but also no loser stat rolls you don't want to play. Even better, with the right group, is just allow the players to choose their own stats. Decided what stat types are appropriate for the game and let them know when they choose their stats.

If you aren't going to accept what you roll, or are willing to accept it but want to kill off the character immediately in play, what is the use of rolling?
