So I went to ComicCon in NYC and sat in on the George R. R. Martin spotlight...

So as a happy medium, they came up with the concept of "consortium points". What that meant was, anytime you allowed another writer to use a character you created in a story, you got 1 consortium point. The more consortium points you get, the more $$$ you would make :) The writer that wanted to use your character would basically tell you what he had planned for the character, and you could either veto it or not (and if you don't, you'd make more money). So if you really did not like the ideas another writer had for your character (such as killing them off), you don't let them do it.

That's a nice system to promote sharing between writers through incentives, but also giving creators a veto power.

*sigh* One day I will make it to more cons.....

I guess that explains why Thieves World seemed to become a closed shop written by fewer and fewer writers as it went on. Of course, having so many uber-characters to begin with was sort of a problem, IMO. If they'd reined in the cheese at the start and everyone had played nicer (although they were establishing the form as they went, so problems should have been expected), it would have ended up more satisfactorily, IMO.

Interesting stuff!

RigaMortus2, tried to e-mail you but not sure it took -- I run the So Spake Martin collection, which contains e-mails from Martin to fans, as well as fan reports from signings and conventions. Mind if I include your posts in it? :)
