So I'm Watching Ocean's Eleven...

And then the whole fun of a DM giving the PCs detailed maps of whatever they're going to heist/scam/etc. next, and letting them set up the plan themselves.

Of course, I'd have the PCs be autonomic from any sort of Boss Dude. :D

My tops three are:
Blow
Operation Swordfish
Escape from New York

Im currently running a game based off of "The Italian Job" great movie! Everyone wanted to do a "rogue" game based in a city, so I figured that would work great. The players have had a great time planning and plotting. (I have been trying to take down notes on their personality and things they like to buy, or ask me about buying that is too much gold, so hopefully later in the campaign they can see the villan has already bought it all and i can play that up later like the movie heh; no one has caught on yet).

They are going to steal a major artifact from a Kingdom that is at war with a neighboring empire and are now having second thoughts whether they should ask for more, or sell it to the highest bidder. I have one of my PC (who is playing a doppleganger that killed his character) but no one knows that. : ) We haven't got to the point where he is going to screw over the other three PC's yet. ::evil laugh:: Waiting to get the artifact and then the real fun begins......

How about The Quick and the Dead? Would make a great Deadlands game.

As for books, I've always wanted to run a D20 modern featuring Dortmunder and company, from the Robert E. Westlake novels.

So I'm just passing some time, watching Ocean's Eleven, waiting for my girlfriend to get off work, and I started thinking -- how rad would a campaign set around an Ocean's Eleven type con group be? It could work in DnD, or any number of modern games.

So -- what rad DM has some time to run this as a PbP? :D

I've never been able to do anything like this -- why? It requires extreme detailed focus on two aspects of the game world that have always been difficult (for me) to simulate: passage of time (down to the second) and detailed locations (down to mechanics of items in the room as they could all potentially play a part in the planned action).

That's just my experience though.. if any of you have pulled it off, all the power to you - I'm jealous. :) Just explaining why I haven't been able to do it in any of my own games...

I can't believe noone's mentioned the 13th Warrior yet.
Many people have noted its similarity to D&D adventures.

I personally have never seen a movie that made me try to stat out and recognize D&D mechanics than it.

I would really enjoy a heist-style adventure, Ocean's Eleven meats Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, meats The Italian Job. In fact, I might consider doing a PbP. Give me some time to think it over, but stay tuned to this thread, I'll announce any heist typ game I intend on ruining, I mean running, here first.

Just thought of another thing that might be important if I do decide to run this game: how many of the people interested in this kind of thing have Spycraft? I don't men to start recruiting yet, I'm not even sure if I'm going to run it, but Spycraft woul probably be my first choice for this kind of game. In particular, Since Dave-O suggested this, i would want to include him if I run it, so I need to know if Spycraft would work for him. Just to repeat, I'm not definately doing this, just doing some gauging of interest.

I always thought a ghostbusters game would be kind of fun. Maybe a "second generation" type deal ala Extreme Ghostbusters.

If you watch EBay, you might be able to pick up a copy of the West End Games Ghostbusters RPG. There were two editions, one after each movie. I didn't much like the Ghostbusters II RPG because it larded down the original game with too many unnecessary rules additions. The original Ghostbusters RPG is fantastic, very fun, very much in keeping with the atmosphere of the film. The original game had some very cool, funny adventure modules - Ghost Toasties, and one of my favorite RPG adventures, Hot Rods of the Gods.

You forgot the best D&D-Movie ever.
D&D - The Movie.
It has anything you want
a princess in need
a dungeon
a villian
and dragons lots of dragons.
