So is this indeed how it works?

There's a limit on how many times you can access a Healing Surge per encounter.

There is a limit yes, but is it lower than 20?

A second level cleric can trigger 3 healing surges, and a first level paladin could trigger 3 healing surges (with a wis of 16). For your typical dwarven fighter we are now at up to 7 healing surges triggered by various minor actions. At level 2.

I bet that by level 30 you have A LOT more powers that trigger healing surges than 7. 15-30 seems likely in a 5 man party using all daily/utility powers.

I'm reminded of a scene from Oasis of the White Palm, and its companion module, Lost Tomb of Martek. A mighty and evil Efreet Pasha had been freed on the land, and the PCs were tasked with finding its bane to destroy it. They do indeed find a Noble Djinn and free it to challenge the Pasha. However, they are evenly matched in power, and cause all sorts of havoc on the land as they fight, and the PCs must find ANOTHER way to help the Djinn beat the Efreet. The two even show up in random encounters, fighting like two Warner Brother Tasmanian Devils, before whirling off into the sunset again. :)

It kind of brings to mind this image, of two titans so powerful all they can do is hurt one another, not kill one another.

Just wanted to jump in with praise for that series of adventures - I wish I could find them again (pdf market, maybe?)...at some point it looked like we were going to have no impact once the two started duking it out, and we'd be spectators, then there was another critical thing for us to do...and you got those cool gems and the harness of Seker, I believe.

If you are ever in the situation where you have used 20 healing surges in one fight, then clearly your fun quota for the day has been met, and it's time to bask in the afterglow.

Bad Henry! no spoilers, just playing through that one now with our party of mostly Norsemen from Sodafjord (or however its spelt) my drunken master took a bit of reimagining but its going well.

Friend of mine after seeing the 4e Monster Manual:

From what I have heard this is in line with other comments about 4e combat.

Is this indeed reality, and how is it a good thing? If it is not, where is the misconception?

Not sure this is a bad thing...it would be like Godzilla vs. Gamera, the fight should last the whole movie. :)

Against PCs...well, a high level PC has, what, about 150-200 hit points? That dragon is mean.

I also understand that most monsters only last a few rounds, so giving them dozens of abilities just bogs things down. But a dragon might be an entire adventure unto itself. It's both a super-powerful enemy and an arch-villian, possibly game ending. But this guy is just, well, boring.

What game experience do you want to have with the arch-villian?

Forget about game rules and all that for a minute. What would you like to be doing? What choices do you want to be making? What do you want the players to do, what choices do you want them to make, and what would you like them to feel?

Let's take a look at an iconic dragon: Smaug. What could Smaug do in a combat? Why was he dangerous?

*He could hypnotize.

*He could breath fire.

*He was big like a freight train and had teeth and claws.

*He could fly.

That's it. Yet Smaug was something of a force majeur in his setting, he killed off an entire dwarf- town and he made Gandalf really nervous about the future of Middle Earth.

A creature doesn't need 15 esoteric special abilities to be interesting, it's enough if it's big and dangerous enough. Then the implications will come on their own.

.

Once you put it like that, high level fights that last less than a minute of real time are really weird.

So it takes an epic, Silmarillion-level dragon 5 1/2 minutes to fight another epic, Silmarillion-level dragon... so?

Exactly. People have the books, and they focus on this?

Speaking of boring.
