Yes, he did. I didn't think it was tongue-in-cheek at all. I don't have the exact quote, but he basically said Please shower every day, it will make it a much more plesent weekend for everyone, and it's just good hygiene.

This was my first GenCon and I was pleasantly surprised with the level of hygiene. Perhaps I was just lucky but everyone in the games I was in was ok (and I played in a lot of games). Don't get me wrong, you'll catch some wafts every once in a while but I didn't encounter anything that overpowered my senses.

Some people have been known to pass out the small bars of soap the hotels provide and/or sticks of deoderant.

Personally, I've only encounted a few smelly gamers at GenCon.

If I was going to guess, I'd say many of the stinky gamers don't really have a place to shower everyday, driving up to the con and sleeping in their car or wherever. Perhaps they schedule themselves to play in so many events that they figure they can just catnap here and there between sessions.

If there are any truckstops nearby, maybe the con could give directions - many truckstops have showers for interstate truckers who sleep in their trucks.

I guarantee that I wouldn't have shaved the whole weekend. I never shave on vacation, and half the time I don't on weekends. I'd have a serious George Michael thing going on by Sunday.

From some of the descriptions of Gencon, I bet the Balrog would have thought twice.
