D&D 5E So my Dm wants to nerf my Vengence paladin against all but chosen foes?!

maraxion

First Post
So My Dm likes fluff and so do I, but hes reading the PHB as if the vengance paladin is on a mision and want me to chose some special foe. It can be a group etc and not just human, dragon etc.
And all of these no mater how connected must die.
Also if someone where to come to me on the streat and ask for vengance for a misdeed against my above foe, THEN I can use my powers against those bad people. And if I dont kill them then Im an oathbreker...

I like the idea.

But then he tells me that all my vengance aspects wil only be towards avenging. That means vengance spells spells, Vow of emnity etc. Against other they are useless.
I can in some aspect live with that, but what is strange is that he says that this comes clearly from the text. That all paladins have a code in PHB and that only if they keep this then they can use their more special gifts against special foes.

As far as I can read the PHB I cannot get these rules, as its not stated clearly. Seems like 2 lines of fluff for every one line, but hey I wanted to ask you guys for input.
Seems like fun, but then again saying I cannot use some abilities and spells is special.

Just tell your DM that you are sworn to wreak vengence on hostile creatures. It's not creatures in general, it's the hostility that riles you. That should cover most situations.

Especially when it comes to those those punka$$ toddlers.

Edit: this post was funnier before the OP edited the toddlers out of the initial post.

Ugh. Bad bad bad. I like the idea--as a character concept that you hold yourself to. Artificially nerfing it means you'll suck against the millions of other things. I mean; that completely destroys your Divine Smite ability, which is how you keep up with the other martial's damage.

Divine smite is actualy a paladin thing, not under the vengace bit. So its good.

Oath of Enmity is just that, you choose an enemy, and make them your special target. You just do it mid-battle.

That said, it seems fine to houserule it. Though I would ask for a magic sword to compensate for the nerf.

The idea could be fun, just ask him to consider that you might also be like the Punisher... reaching the evil is just as important as actually putting it to rest. Anyone that stands in your way could also liable of judgement... but as your Oath say it might be worth your mercy. Just because it's not part of that band of thieves does not mean that he is innocent or preventing you from reaching them, even if unknowingly.

In the end, yeah it's fluff. If you want to play it like that, then it's ok. I seriously doubt you will go "angel of retribution" mode in a tavern brawl.

As a player, I wouldn't stand for it. I'd ask the DM to trust me to play my character, just as I trust him to adjudicate the game fairly.

I'd point your DM to this thread, and show him that perhaps he has misunderstood the text. Indeed this does cripple your class, and that is not the goal of you class abilities. I'm not against house ruling some things, but only with good reason.
