So once you become an outsider ...

There are a few classes that change your type. A 20th level monk becomes an outsider. A Contemplative (PrC from Defenders of the Faith) becomes an outsider at 20th level. Someone who takes on the half-earth elemental template becomes an outsider.

What does this mean, exactly? I know this means you can be shut out using a Protection from X spell. I also know that Charm Person and Hold Person no longer work on you.

Can a 20th level monk no longer be raised using a resurrection or true resurrection spell?

What are the other effects of becoming an outsider?

This actually gets a little sticky. According to the strictest interpretation of the rule, you gain all of the outsider traits. This means you can't be raised using resurrection or true resurrection spells, and you otherwise go by the description of outsiders in the Monster Manual.

Where it gets sticky is that the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting has a section on Native Outsiders. That is outsiders that originate in Faerun. The reason this is sticky is because it makes more sense for the 20th level monk, but it isn't core D&D, so it pretty much only applies if your DM agrees to it. You should look up native outsiders for further clarification.

It is mentioned in 3.5 PHB, that despite being outsiders, lvl 20 monks can be brought back from the dead normally.

in MM 3,5 they have the consepte of a native outsider to if you are a native outsider contra and outsider outsider you need to eat and sleep but you can beraised, reincarnated and resurrected. In all other aspex you are an outsider so you cant be held by hold person but you can be dismissed

I believe that you can be resurrected, but only on your native plane. So a Monk, Planetouched, half-elemental, etc., can be raised on the Prime Material plane, since it's their native plane.

The question I have is: Say someone casts a Banishment spell to send you to your home plane, but you're already on your home plane...I guess nothing happens?

Let's just hope your DM isn't running a campaign where you are travelling to many different planes. Banishment would be an easy way to get rid of a pesky 20th level Monk. :evil grin:

If anyone from the Material Plane travels to another plane, they are considered "Outsiders" while on that plane and can all be banished - reguardless of class or type.
