D&D 5E So, the martial classes just got a boost in versitility.

Why is it the fighter, monk, and rogue have the same hit, damage, and expertise die progression? Isn't the fighter supposed to be the better fighter? Sure he gets more hit points and weapon/armor proficiencies, but otherwise fights the same as a rogue or monk.

I think they need to differentiate the progressions more.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but it's possible to make classes extremely distinct based on class abilities and (in this case) specifics of their maneuvers or feats. Honestly, I think it's the superior way to do it; you may not notice a math difference, but you will certainly notice your "maneuvers".

Oh, I won't argue the two classes aren't distinct in terms of flavor. But I still feel they classes should be distinct in effectiveness. If the rogue is the offensive equal of the fighter, the classes are much less complementary to each other.

Are you certain they aren't distinct in effectiveness?

I'm happy if they're equally effective at different things, personally.

I think I'd have preferred the Rogue to have the same Martial Damage Dice and less Martial Damage Bonus, while the Monk should have slower Dice progress but the same damage bonus progress as the Fighter.

I am not sure I am liking the parity of the martial dice, bonus damage, and attack between the Fighter, Monk, and Rogue. It's going to look even worse when you throw in the Paladin and Ranger. It's just too bland.

This is the first time they've introduced equal martial dice for people to test. WotC needs to make sure those dice actually work at the number they've set before they can start changing or adjusting them. By having all three classes use them the same... that's MANY more people testing this particular baseline of damage dice. So WotC will get better feedback on how this damage dice mechanic plays out.

If they made all 3 different... people might respond to the surveys with something "Martial damage dice didn't work at all! Nothing was balanced!"... and WotC is left wondering "Well... WHICH martial damage dice format didn't work? Or did all of them not work?"

You can't break the rules until you've established the rules. Let them establish a baseline Martial damage dice mechanic first *and then* ask them to change things up to help distinguish the Fighter from the Rogue from the Monk.

+1 for constructive criticism. They are still figuring out the math, so I`m not surprised to see baseline mechanics as a placeholder. Let them do the numbers thoroughly. There`s still going to be plenty of time to tear them apart AFTER they declare the playtest finished...

No need to get excited about a perceived lack of features at this beta-stage of development
