D&D (2024) So...the next OneD&D update is gonna feel weird...

In the meantime, WotC is relying on the good will of the player base to test out its OneD&D ideas. I wonder how long until the next playtest packet comes out, and how folks will react. Could get spicy.

How can they rely on any information generated in these circumstances? Is the OneD&D play test about to become collateral damage?

I think it's too late for zero collateral damage, but it's 10 days until the deadline for the next survey, and the next packet will presumably be out after that.

If they manage some kind of actual apology and climbdown tonight then I think they might still get useful results from the next packet (though this one is probably already quite damaged), but I think it's inevitable at this point they'll get a lot fewer results, because an awful lot of people filling this in a fairly "serious" D&D players who are disproportionately likely to know and care about about OGL 1.1.

The only way things go positive with a future update is if it comes up with something genuinely killer, that makes people go "OH COOL!" or "Oh wow why weren't we already doing that!!!", especially if it's not something current 5E could easily handle. But there's been none of that yet in 1D&D's playtest, only "Kinda cool I guess" "Yeah ok" and "Bleh" (to be fair that hasn't been much awful either).

If they do a total non-apology or double down, they'll lose a gigantic slice of their playtesters (maybe even the majority), and they'll get a (probably single digit percentage) of dedicated trolls feeding them bad data to boot. That could end up being quite a problem as they seem to want to rely on the 70% rule, and I think if you've driven away a whole slice of your community, the remaining ones are going to like pretty different things (indeed I suspect they may mindlessly like almost everything).

So, if folks are mad at WotC, and going to leave over this... does their feedback actually matter? OneD&D will be the game for folks who don't know or don't care about the OGL. They'll continue to give feedback as normal.

Thus, WotC can probably just eliminate whatever highly negative feedback they get, and keep their eyes on the less virulent stuff, and probably still hit the mark their remaining market wants.

Oh, I think OneD&D is over now.
The good feeling, positive spin, promoting the "best" role-playing game of all time "playtest" I think is over. With the community vitriol, it will be impossible for the designers to get helpful feedback.
We'll still get 6E, but OneD&D is done.

I intend to give them genuine data but to also let them know in the free commentary that, that is what I am doing but that I am very unhappy about the new licence and the treatment of the OGL.

I've got to admit, all this has made me totally lose interest in OneD&D. I'm usually pretty good at separating the art from the "artist," but WotC/Hasbro's handling of all this has been so disappointing and disheartening that I just don't want to be involved any more.

From what people have said in other threads, I think there are going to be a lot of ignored survey results. They're going to have to filter out all the surveys from people who are salty about the OGL 1.1.

Every hour they don't give us the correct response kind of drains my ability to care enough to read the next one. If they don't do all the right things, they've more or less killed the hobby for me and forced me to play something else.

I was so excited to get back into D&D. It even brought me back here after, what, five years away? since I skipped 5E for much more amicable reasons. Now it seems like it would be rewarding people who ruined my fun.

If you care enough to answer the survey odds are your invested enough to care about the OGL.

This is why I will lie on the surveys, make them think I'm a fan, plant false playtest results under the guise of helping out the brand, telling them things I think will help their business:
"I would gladly pay $1 for access to this feat." "This species upgrade is worth the $5." "So glad you revoked the OGL 1.0 - we don't need content like Spelljammer ship combat." "Chris Pine is a big, bankable star - not basically a guy who hasn't had the lead role in a hit movie in a decade."
