So, What Does CE Stand For Again?

Does that mean if they cast polymorph you have to wait in game for them to flip to the page in the MM, figure out how the character's stats will be altered, and then calculate everything? At higher levels that could take more than five minutes, in which everyone else is twiddling their thumbs doing nothing in the middle of combat.

I much prefer premade stats for various forms.

Yes, it does slow the play down a bit, but it keeps it fair. Besides, 5 minutes is just the right amount of time for one or two other players to hit the bathroom(s), another to grab another soda, and other background stuff. It hasn't been as much of a problem as it could be (although I may have to have preprinted monster cards (or full pages) for polymorph, just in case).

That is one of the funniest things I've read lately :)

Thanks, Wayne! I'm sure I'll look back on it and laugh one of these days, myself.

No, no one but me and the SO has anything other than the PHB and some of the splatbooks. The sorcerer's playa has to make do with the SRD -- heaven forbid he set foot in a gaming store. And I would like it if those in the group who know less about the traditions of D&D would learn more, so I have no trouble with them looking through the MM. Saves me the trouble of having to explain why their characters should be so scared of that creature with a tiger's head and backward hands, or the pitch-black dragon the size of a jumbo jet.

I use the Knowledge skills to determine what everyone knows in character when I do this. Gives folks an incentive to spend skill points on Knowledge.

He's also not satisfied with the limitations on his character. He's been trying to buy use-activated wondrous items that replicate various spells. For some reason, I'm really annoyed that he's got something that lets him cast Tenser's Floating Disk at will, probably because I can't remember anything about him acquiring that, but since I'm lackluster on encumbrance it's not a problem. So far the only other one he's managed to acquire is an eye of aura reading, which takes up the headband/hat slot and lets him cast detect magic. He was very annoyed that the thing cost 2,700 gp, when the hand of the mage only costs 900 gp (the eye was CL 3 then; I bumped it down to CL 1 since CL doesn't seem to matter).

Okay, this has turned into a whine fest. Better stop now before everyone goes away :)

What is CE?
ce.gif

The CE Mark is a product certification mark that is placed on products compliant to the New Approach Directives of the European Union.

The CE Mark is required for manufacturers (from anywhere in the world) wishing to sell their products into the European Union. The CE Mark proves to buyers that the product fulfills all the essential safety and environmental requirements as defined in the European Directives.

The CE Marking Directive (93/68/EEC) was adopted on 07-22-1993. The CE Marking Directive gives a detailed description of the initials CE and any other marks specific to a particular directive and the ways conformity may be acquired. In return for fulfilling the CE Marking requirements, the manufacturer (or its agents) is able to market the product across the entire European market with only one approval procedure.

(sorry, I had to get sassy)

If they can't flip through the MM, how will they be able to use spells like polymorph and summon monster?

I allow them to have the stats handy when they can reach the appropriate level for the various summon monster spells (I assume knowledge of the monsters abilities is included with knowledge of the spell) but polymorth I have limited to only 'common' monsters (basically any non-planar creature with a CR of 3 or lower) or monsters the PC has encountered. Usually the wizard finds one or two things they liek to polymorth into (or cast upon another party member) and have those stated up before hand. Spending the 5 or so minutes to alter a PCs stats has never been that big a deal.

Have the character in game research monsters and go by what creatures he actually has expeince with. And not just let the player open the books to summon whatever he wants based on the most powerful creatures stat wise. Heck, get a MM that has pictures and just the fluff of the mopnsters in it but no stats and use it as a prop about what the players know about creatures.

That is a good idea (the new Warhammer RPG did this with their Bestiery book I think). My current group doesn't polymorth much anymore though.

Worse, try gaming with someone who knows the rules, is reading them aloud from the book, and deliberately misquotes them in an attempt to mislead you.

I caught a guy doing that because I happened to have that same section of text memorized. I'm glad I don't game with him any more.

Wow. That'd end a game session right there. Next session would be one player short.
