Anything is only worth what someone will pay for it. It may be 'worth' more to you, but it doesn't mean someone else values it at the same worth as you. If sellers can get that price, good for them...

You went to GenCon, you could only buy one, if you want to recoup some of your trip cost through selling to people that want it... Sure.

But I think folks look at this like ticket scalpers, where by buying this for immediate resale means that someone else that was there that wanted it couldn't get it. I get that too.

Though, side note, I recall the worst ticket scalpers are companies like Ticketmaster doing it themselves.

I have no problem with people selling it, but I think it would actually be worth more in time due to the unique stamp page or what have you, and would be worth hanging on some tike for the value to go up for collectors.

As expected, some of those who bought the new Player's Handbook at Gen Con are selling it on eBay.

The buy-it-now prices seem to vary a lot--$120, $145, $165, $175, $225. There's about a dozen on there that I can see.

yeah, this was the prevailing argument; scalpers need to scalp to pay for their vacation$$$.
I just wanted a chance at the book for my group.

I am not understanding why people view this as unethical? They paid to go to GenCon (an expensive trip) and stood in line a long time to get this, and bring it back, and pay a fee to eBay, and send it to you. How is that wrong that they put this effort in to see a return on their time to sell it to people who want it at the price they're offering?

BTW there are MANY more now. A couple as low as $70, though I think I just saw that snatched up right away (and no not me).

Hmm, no one stood in line to get this, you had to login to the GenCon events page each morning at 7 for a chance at a lottery (about 700 sold prepay). I tried two days and the site kept freezing and crashing, 3rd day I didnt bother.

Im very disappointed that WotC/Hasbro chose to drop the PHB this way, really naughty word to loyal players. They should have told their publisher (and paid significant overtime) to produce 5-6 thousand copies, everyone who wants one gets up early and gets in line.

Except standing in line is a poor use of time. Plus it has other concerns such as security and logistics.

They should have had a better website that wouldn't crash. Easy to do if they had set it up right. Or simple done a lottery draw each day for each registered attendee who sign up for the offer.

Undeniably, but my take away is 'people are stupid'. Thats a whole lot of money for something that is not going to be limited at all.

Well, they have an exclusive bookplate and the logo in gold foil, so it is - in a way - a limited edition.
