So where would a wizard keep his spellbook when he sleeps?

Something came up in a recent game session that started me thinking, where would a wizard store his spellbook at night?

What happened was that our group was ambushed by a sorcerer with a fireball during the night. Luckily, my character was awake on watch when this happened, so the spellbook issue was not important at the time. But many players (including me as well) lost a lot of unattended items to the fireball.

Later, I began to wonder what would have happened if I wasn't on watch. Since the spellbook is considered a wizard's most prize possesion (he's a high level commoner more or less without it), what would he do with it? Would he sleep cradleing it like a child, use it like a pillow, keep it in his backpack laying next to him, or something else? Just wanted to see what other's would think of this.

I think sleep with it, likely under his pillow (spellbooks are likely too hard to use as a pillow). You could even have fun and come up with an idea that makes the spellbook a vital portion of the wizard's arcane power, almost as if the act of creating the spellbook draws a portion of the wizard's life out and places it into the spellbook. From there you get crazy and say that not only must a wizard prepare spells but he must keep the spellbook on his person at all times or else his spellcasting abilities begin to decrease, maybe losing one spell slot for each foot away from him that the spellbook is.

But now I'm getting carried away.

If he's a high-enough level wizard I think there are lots of options. Here's a few that I've used with my wizard or have thought about using -- my DM loves to rob me of my spellbooks :(

- Extra copies of the spell book, with a few safely parked in a town's vault or some such.

- Take the feat, Spell Mastery a few times.

- Have a protected spellbooks. Keep it stored in a miniature bag of holding strapped about his neck. For that matter, keep it deminished in size and stored in a robe pocket... Have it be etherial. Have it protected from multiple elements...

- Use "alternate" spellbooks: I like the idea of tattoo's as a form of a spell book. The wizard could permanently ink their favorite spell onto their fore-arm... then they'd never be without their "spell book". Stone tablets make for another fairly durable spellbook (course, a little heavy for the stereotypical wizard)...

I dont have my book handy, but if I recall, Magic of Faerun has some options for protecting a spellbook. For example, you can have differed covers that give the book protections like Fire or Acid Resistance /5 et al. Might save the life of your sacred tome the next time a sneaky sorcerer attacks!

Im sure someone has their book nearby and can suggest more options.

Cheers,

I think I'm just glad Henry has never played a Jawa Wizard. :p

Don't worry if you don't get that. Henry may explain if he drops by this thread. :D
