So, you roll 6 18's.

1 yes i'm increadbly lucky (might be pursuaded to make up to 3 of the scores non-18 by useing the 4th dice) and i'll know that his first serious saving throw will fail and kill the character...

2 whatever character concept/race I have in my head to play in the campaign currently a human evoker is my reserve idea and after that a rogue ... and after that a cleric or 5

Assuming I don't choose to volentarily lower some of those stats?

Hmm.

Well, the first image that pops to mind is Dark Schneider from Bastard, so possibly a human wizard (or sorcerer) along similar lines, maybe.

On the other hand, the chance to play a kobold that doesn't suck despite his racial ..er.. 'features' would be pretty tempting...

While it is statistically improbable, in the general sense, to roll 6 rolls of 18, it is not impossible. It is still possible, though highly unlikely. So, to say that it "will literally *never* happen" is a bit of an exaggeration.
True, true. :)

I was exaggerating, but I was referring to known reailty rather than any kind of hypothetical. I can see that technically it could happen, but I still think that it literally never will (in reality).

On a lighter note, if someone does this, and I see it (for example) then I'll have to eat some boots, or whatever inedible materials are handy.

And if I was going to decide on a race/class combo based on ability scores alone, and said scores were as noted, it would probably have to be something snooty, arrogant and generally intolerable - an Elven Paladin, perhaps? ;)

On the other hand, it makes sense that someone with these gifts could as easily be very calm, self-assured and easygoing. Which brings me back to any race and class then, really.

You are playing in a new campaign with a great GM who is rather stringent.

You can either use a 28 point buy, or roll 4d6 (6 times) and drop lowest.

And take what you get.

You decide to roll (in front of the GM).

You get 6 18's.

1) Do you play the character?
2) If you do, what class/race? And why?

Believe it or not the very first time I rolled up a character I rolled a bunch of 18's (this was in basic, no roll four drop the lowest, just the standard three dice per stat)

And I lowered my 18 STR down to 14, just because I didn't want to look like Conan the Barbarian, Also dropped CHA down from 16 to 13, (can't remember why?)
but kept DEX, INT, WIS high

I've always been story based,

I'd play it, but go for some class that is mechanically weak, but has neat fluff (hexblade and swashbuckler come to mind).

Hmmm...a pixie swashbuckler... :)

For what it is worth, a few...decades (good god!)...ago I was in an AD&D 1st ed campaign that had a cleric with 5 18s (and low int). I wasn't there when she was rolled but I see no reason why all of them, including the DM, would lie to me about it. But she was a total newbie so its not like she abused it.

If the character has been rolled in front of the GM, no big deal.

I'd probably play something that requires a lot of high ability scores to get the most out of like a monk or paladin (or swordsage.)

Swordsage sounds fun...who published that???

Thanks,
Rich

Highly unlikely may be a stretch too. If you think of all the players that have rolled up characters in the past 30 years. Though some didn't use 3d6, given the ones who did, I bet statistcally, it has happpened!!!

Then again, I never saw it.

Thanks,
Rich
