then the guy starts laughing. He removed a Mask of Deception and he was the second in command for the forces of Evil that our hero killed, he died as well. This guy laughed at us and told we will never find the true body. The sarcophogus had a contingency on it that teleported the true body of our hero to a secret place and brought the other here. No one noticed.

The mask works on dead people who can't set it themselves? A contingency crypt set up by the guy and his boss who were both already dead? Because obviously the hero's survivors used this "For The Body of My Greatest Enemy" sarcophagus they found lying around in the rubble.

Pure foolish cheesyness. Tell you DM that he rules the entire damn universe and if he wants to play against you he should just drop a meteor on your head. Then tell him you want an adventure with a point.

I agree with Kahuna Burger . this whole story sounds to contieved, with the only goal to set the PCs back. Could be that it is the mood of the campaign - struggle against all-but-hopeless- odds, but in a regular "beat then evil forces" campaign I'd be very frustrated as a player. There is sometimes a fine line between outsmarting the PCs (or players) and making it impossible for the PCs to achieve their goals.

Last adventure I played the DM brought a Blackgaurd back that had faced our party before (and almost killed our barbarian with a a mounted charge & smite good after torturing the rest of the PCs). The blackguard challenged the barbarian to single combat (after the barbarian had already taken some damage, and after downing a cure potion herself), but the battle itself was rather fair (with the exception of a deeper darkness used by the blackguard). In the end, the blackguard was brought to her knees (1 hp left) and begged for her life. Only after the barbarian had stopped the combat, talked a bit and then was picking up the evil lifestealing sword of his adversary did the blackguard jump out of the window on her nightmare to flee. If the blackguard had had a contingency or similar "fail-safe" escape it would have left the impression that no matter what she would have escaped. That way it was literally in the hands of the PC if she could escape or not.

I think, judging from the amount of information available, that a simple robbed (and possibly trapped) tomb might have been better to set the PCs back a bit.

Agreed... I don't see how this DM was in any way "clever", there's a lot more to being clever than going outside the rules and designing a cheesy Deus Ex Machina.

I think the DM had a plan, you followed that plan and he pulled in his arc to finish off the plan. IT worked, you fell for it, now you got a major baddy your DM introduced to make sure your life is a living hell now!

He accomplished a few things here:

1. Got you to play D&D for 6 months on a mission
2. Introduced a bad guy NPC
3. Got another quest for your PC's to go on now

I think he did his job.

I agree that it has kept us playing and interested for a reason and yes he is a good DM, BUT when we tried to put plans into action when he played the NPCs, the religious leaders (some of the most powerful guys in the world), he made them sound like chicken :):):):)s!! I was trying to get these guys to start bringing back other heros that died awhile ago, just not from my religion, to aid the fight, but i had to throw the biggest tantrum (in game) throwing tables around and stuff to get them off of there asses. Y do good people have to be so stupid??

And as for the other players in the game, the ones that my character trusts are either dead and not playing, or are leaving the game cause they gotta go away for work and stuff. Thus the PCs that are left are the ones that my charac doesnt trust at all (he also is holding onto a book that can help the entire world, but he is being stupid with it).

But it should get interesting soon i hope.
