D&D 5E (2024) Solasta 2 and the 1/2 elf

The mechanics for half-elves are necessary to the point that the mechanics are necessary for any race. Yes, you don't need a specific half-elf race to play a half-elf in D&D. But you don't need a "elf" race either. Or indeed, any race, especially now as 5E has stripped most of the restrictions, guidelines and differences from them mechanically.

Not for 40 years. But “has darkvision” is hardly character defining in modern D&D. It’s the character who doesn’t have it that stands out.
admittedly, humans have consistently been one of the ones to not get any form of special vision or senses though, right? so tannis having it is somewhat notable to making him more than just a baseline human, plus those novels weren't written for 'modern DnD' they were for, what? 3.5e? i haven't read any of them IDK.

Pretty sure it was 2nd edition.

Sure, the game has changed a lot since then, especially with regards to human-centricity. There were what, 6(?) humans in the heroes of the lance, one half human, a dwarf and a kender. These days you are unlikely to see a human in a typical party.
