Some interesting news about 4th edition

Dungeons and Dragons as a combo CCG and minis game makes perfect sense to me.

Your starter pack consists of heros and monsters, plus a selection of feat cards, spell cards, and magic item cards. Adventures consist of map tiles with trap cards and treasure cards.

Best of all, it could be played with or without a GM.

What makes anyone think that WotC cares enough about a bunch of graying grognards to not make a change like this? I've read numerous times that the CCG market is much more robust than the RPG market and that the d20 license/OGL hasn't worked out the way that WotC thought it would. It seems like a smart business decision to retool the product line while taking advantage once again of the Dungeons and Dragons brand name. If I had the choice to sell product to an aging, shrinking demographic or a younger, growing one, that would seem like a no-brainer to me. The heck with nostalgia.

First of all, speculation is fine, and poking good-natured fun at the story is fine, but let's please not insult the fellow forum member. Thanks, all.

Because it's not just "greiving grognards" - it's something like an estimated 4 million people playing the game in its current form.

Here's what I CAN see - I can see D&D in its current form, and then I can see a card-based D&D alongside it that's good for an hourlong session, where you use combos of cards to build simple dungeons, or even game plots like save the princess or stop the pirates, that can be resolved in an hour or two. DM's use different cards from players, maybe even sold as "Player Expansions" and "DM Expansions" if they aren't going to mix them together, and the whole thing is balanced one against the other. Ultra-simple directions on the card give the info needed to alter challenges based on level or number of heroes participating, and the reward is the ability to use +1 extra card to build the heroes' resources per adventure they complete.

At worst, it's a collectible game set that's sold at least a few units until the populace decides it sucks, or if it catches on like wildfire, then it both introduces people to D&D, and it gets players in the mindset of "needing to buy more books" as a substitute for the gratification that you get from buying expansions. All fads die off, but the RPG in its current form isn't a fad by itself, it's a hobby with a strong staying power for those who are committed to it, to continue in it and buying things for many years.

Oh c'mon Cowpie Zombie - you have to post the thread a couple of times to keep stuff like this going! You can't just drop da bomb, walk away and expect real drama and/or hysterics.

Kids today, got no repect for the Art.

I miss Bugaboo.

In other words, a D&D version of Warhammer Quest or Runebound.

That would actually be an interesting idea.

Y'know... if this really is someone that was with TSR 'long before' they got bought by WoTC, and thus long long before Hasbro... how many of those can there be?

It'd be really funny if there were a bunch of janitorial staff that fit the description :)

This thread only merits a 2 on the "Bugaboo" scale of Trolling. It would have been much higher if it wasn't an almost verbatim copy of what was previously posted about the upcoming 3E game years ago. But still, it has garnered 68 replies so far, so we couldn't rate it a "1".

Bugaboo, where are you?
