Hi.
I'm trying to start learning AD&D and I think this forum is best place where I can find my answers.

This is my complete story:

1. We (me and my friends) want to play AD&D!!
2. I'm from Iran. almost no1 knows about AD&D. I guess we are 2nd group in iran!
3. I started learning by reading pdf books, like Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide.
4. We started the game. we decided to learn step by step. at this time, we have Paladin, Thief, Ranger and fighter in our party. we know combat (without Saving throw), Gaining Exp, and playing.
5. We play 2nd edition. Because, that first party did it too! and we decided to follow them.

these are questions:

1. Is 2nd edition proper to learn? or it will cause problem(s) later?
2. How can I learn AD&D faster?!
3. Is here any resource that can help me in learning? (except rulebooks)
4. do u have any advice?
5. May I hope any1 can help me personally on yahoo, etc?

Beforhand, thank you!

Welcome, Musketeer! I'll try my best to answer your questions.

1. AD&D is a fine choice. The only "problems" you will hear about, in this forum at least, are from people who play different editions of the game. The thing is, you do not have to play any other edition if you don't want to. I know people who have been playing AD&D for more than a decade, and haven't had any problems at all.

2. Practice, practice, practice. :) It's like any other game...the more you play it, the better you get at it. After a few gaming sessions, you will get a feel for the game and how everyone else plays it, and you will find a rhythm that works for everyone. You will eventually memorize the rules that you use most often, and learn to ignore the ones you never use.

3. You have already found my favorite resource for learning to play...ENWorld! You can post questions about the AD&D rules over in the questions over in the 3rd Edition and Older Rules Forum, where AD&D gamers from all over the world are happy to help. If you are looking for story ideas and advice, write a request in the General RPG Discussion forum. There are dozens of other forums for all sorts of things like downloads, NPCs, monsters, ready-to-play adventures...have a look around!

4. The best advice I have ever gotten on playing D&D is this: feel free to make up your own rules. Create your own monsters and dungeons, write new and interesting spells, make up new weapons and armor, anything you want.

5. Check out the Gamers Seeking Gamers section of this site. You should be able to find some outgoing gamers who would like a D&D penpal to bounce ideas off of. You might even be able to join a Play By Post or Play By E-mail game.

Happy Gaming!

Thanks a lot dear friend...

It prover that I wasn't in wrong! and this is the right place that I can learn!

Thank you again and again.

Dragonsfoot.org is dedicated to playing the older editions of D&D. Lots of good resources on their site, including adventures, alternative rules, spells, magic items, etc... all for free.

Just realize many of the posters over there are very, um, dedicated to only playing "Old School" editions of D&D and can get very rude about even mentioning 3E or 4E D&D.

Most of them are pretty fair and reasonable though. Less then 12 of them can make the site less than pleasant if you bring up 3E or 4E, so avoid doing that and you'll find them to be a very pleasant and helpful group.

Here is a link to their main page.

Welcome to Dragonsfoot

From this page you can get to their message board/forum and notice on the right hand side you see links that lead you to a LOT of great resources.
Ditto. Dragonsfoot is a great resource for 1E.
Thank you my friends. I registered there, you was right! There is a good place for old versions... just like here. I will get help from both, ENWORLD and Dragonsfoot!
thank u again n again.

P.S: I wonder, What a good place I found!!

I wonder, does anybody think that you might be able to learn ADnD faster by playing videogames that use the ruleset?

If so which ones do people think would be best?

I wouldn't mind IM'ing you (although I haven't played ADnD I might be able to help you with other aspects)

What is your e-mail?

Now I'm curious.

Having started with AD&D I don't have too many fond memories of it. Granted I had some nice AD&D moments it wouldn't be my first choice these days.

Why do you guys chose AD&D instead of "easy to find" 3.5 or 4.0?
