Somebody Reassure Me About Gen Con

Disappointment / frustration...

I already have my 4-day pass (have for many months now), but I was never informed that the events were finally available for purchase. Naturally, many of the events (and in particular the non-RPGA events) are already sold out or full. (I haven't yet figured out the difference between "Sold Out" and "8/8" sold.)

*sigh*

Yep, this sucks. I really enjoy reading through the prereg book prior to GenCon. I like finding games I might want to try playing prior to getting there.

The Electronic regstration is a great idea but unfortunatly its very problemactic. If it were up to me I would make sure that the servers could handle the load and list games in correct order. It was very frustration paging through list after list for Fiday games and all of the sudden jump over to Sunday games.

I can only hope and pray that Peter makes GenCon all better :)
I'd like to see the people who register as early birds acually be able to register for events first. I'd liek to see the return of the child care, which made it more of a family event. I'd like to see more organization all around. I remember last year asking Information booth a question about where an event was and they said they had no clue and just wander around till I found it.....?

I love GenCon, but if this gets any worse I may have to try Origins out!

Hope to see you all there and good gaming!

I am about to offend people who love Origins.

I went to Origins in 1998, because it fit my schedule better that year.

The events started late -- VERY late, the dealer room did not open until after 12:00, and there was VERY little going on outside of the scheduled events. Origin is more of a boardgame / card /strategy con than a gaming con, and it bored me to tears.

Unless it has changed dramatically in the past 3 years, it is a pale shadow of the endless fun that is Gencon. I beleive you would be better off with DragonCon in Atlanta, instead, if you were to choose.

First of all, thanks, Piratecat, for the info, even if it was the info I was dreading to hear. I started this thread last night right before supper, went upstairs to eat, and was "locked out" the rest of the night due to the 200-person limit, so I didn't receive the heart-rending information until just now. Good thing I'm off work this morning due to an office picnic this afternoon...

Well, as no doubt many of you are, I am majorly disappointed in this decision. I loved flipping through the booklet ahead of time, deciding on what to hit each day. (I always head for the seminars; I have yet to actually game at a Gen Con yet!) Plus, the booklet was invaluable during the convention because of the maps of the local area, especially when one seminar is in the Hyatt and the next one's several blocks away at the Hilton (or whatever). I doubt I'll be able to find the seminars I'm interested in by simply wandering through random hotel conference rooms.

They'd better have some sort of booklet there at the convention, or I'm going to seriously regret having paid for my tickets this year, especially since this will be our only vacation in 2002...

(Insert angry grumblings and mutterings here)

The first number represents open seats :)

You can be sure that there will be an onsite book. Doing two, though, is a significant expense - one I guess they hoped to eliminate. Unfortunate, and not really successful.
