Someone says "I'm quitting version 'x' of D&D" you react by:

These.

I mean, I get that if you play an online game, you tell your guild on your private board. But total strangers on a messageboard where you will probably still hang out, since it caters to all editions?

Just plain weird.
They post because they're seeking validation and vindication, hoping that if they complain, others will complain as well, ultimately leading the community to reject whatever system disenfranchised them, so that everything can go back to what it had been previously.

We're right to reject these folks' arguments as childish.

Very much quoted for truth. I puzzle over why people feel the need to announce their gaming comings and goings on a forum (except for recruitment/socialising sections).
Free time on their hands? The desire to commiserate? The hope that they're creating awareness of the issues that are killing their fun?

The reasons are manifold. But, y'know, it's mostly the free time thing. ;)

If it's an individual saying "I'll never play X again" I roll my eyes.

If it's a group saying "Didn't do it for us, we're going to something else" I shrug.

If a thread's gone on for 10+ pages, I check out the last page to see if it's flamewarry or has progressed into a rational discussion of how one might approach various issues in-game. I've been pleasantly surprised to find a that this is often the case on ENWorld.

Thanks for clearing that up, maybe since i's my day off I should start a thread about threads like this "Someone says, 'Someone says XXXXXXXX how do you react?' how do you react?"

I like such threads. I come here to discuss the hobby. To discuss what we like and what we don’t. To talk about why we like what we like and why we don’t like what we don’t like. Exactly the kind of stuff you’ll find in a “I quit” thread.

I think my enjoyment of the hobby has been very positively influenced by such discussions.

So, my reaction is to read with curiosity and try to learn something.

this.

i then try and get them to convert to OD&D(1974)

It kinda depends on why they posted.

If they're looking for ways to make a game more enjoyable for them, I'll offer suggestions.

If they just don't like Game X and want something new, I'll offer alternatives.

If they're posting to be controversial, I figure I might as well wade on in, since I'm bored and I like talking about games.

If they're posting to start a flame war, "3etards vs. 4ons" or whatever, I'll play along. I like a good flame war as much as anyone. (See above.)

I dunno. I'm past the point in my life where I'll take someone else disliking something I like, personally.

Unless I personally know the person I don't really care. Play and quit whatever you want, it doesn't really matter to me as long as your having fun.
This. Only I don't actually care if they're having fun or not. It's just not something I've got the time or the inclination to give a toss about.

Its called concern trolling everywhere on the internet except on fan websites, where its called regular behavior.

I don't care if people start quitting on editions.
I care if people quit the gaming group they are a part of. I mean, seriously, the game itself is just a set of rules which offers you mechanics and defines the way of fun you can enjoy with them.
If players leave because they don't enjoy the edition we simply change the rpg and have fun with another edition, world, pnp ruleset etc. ...

But maybe i would say something like "well, if thats not your game, ok. But you still be part of our marvel group, right?" or something like that. If someone leaves i played just once with, i really do not care. I care (the real care, you know) for friends only. Sorry world.
