Someone says "I'm quitting version 'x' of D&D" you react by:

I would go to EnWorld and start a thread on the topic, asking the forum goers what they would do in the same situation. And then after having done that, I would go with the consensus.

Seriously, if you're not willing to attempt to have the rules amended so that they'll fit to your group before you decide to quit, I really wonder if you've really tried to enjoy the game. "It's just a show, I should really just relax." (In other words.)

These.

I mean, I get that if you play an online game, you tell your guild on your private board. But total strangers on a messageboard where you will probably still hang out, since it caters to all editions?

Just plain weird.

I really fail to see how this is any weirder than any other topic in this forum. What’s so different about coming to the conclusion that you don’t like a system that makes it weirder to discuss here?

It's "weird" because it usually isn't a topic of discussion. It is a statement of intent. They aren't asking for a discussion, just wanting to let us all know that they are quitting. The most recent thread of this type that I read actually was a topic of discussion because the OP wanted to know others opinions on what other games might meet his style of game. But just coming here to tell us you quit is about as weird as telling us you tried bananas, don't like them and aren't going to eat them any more.

Usually it would be a shrug, unless they give just insane, crazy reasons for quitting. Then it becomes interesting to find out what the problem really is. I've done that with four or five people and as it turned out the root cause for them quitting was not the system, but the theme, GM or the people they were playing it with. They were just in the wrong group for them. For one of those people, he genuinely didn't like the system but he also thought that every RPG under the sun was like Game X. Once he was shown this was not the case, he didn't leave the hobby but just went to look for systems that better suited his playstyle.

welcome to the internet. bulletin boards, newsgroups, chatrooms, and message boards are mainly made up of topics like this.

the ability to actually get something out of the topics or to make something out of them lies in the reader.
