Sorcerer vs Worlock (not a duel thread)

So from the underpowered class poll, it seems many consider the sorc to be less than top of the line power wise.

In addition, the worlock has been suggested to be "what was intended when the sorcerer was made"; this is not a specific quote, but paraphrasing from when CA first came out.

My question is how do the warlock and sorcerer stack up powerwise? Would it be out of question to suggest allowing the warlock in a, generally, core campaign to replace the sorc?

I bring this up because I would like to play an arcanespellcaster next if my current PC (elf monk at 6th who holds his own in the front line so far) goes the way of the DoDo. I shy away from wizard because I really don't like the idea of memorizing spells (played a druid and just didn't get along with that aspect of it) and I don't really want to play a bard.

Anyhoo, felling on how sorc and warlock compare, and also if the warlock is agenerally balanced class period, would be helpful.

Thanks, and feel free to wax poetic about the classes.

The Warlock replaces a "blaster + other stuff" sorc. pretty nicely, at least at low levels. You get NO buffing abilities at all and the character is even less flexible than a sorc. (For the record, I really like the warlock, he just is different than a sorc.)

What appears to be a big problem is that the warlock is too weak at higher levels. His primary ability of never running out of "spells" becomes less relevant when the PCs are really having problems using everything they have already. At 5th level a sorc may run out of useful spells by a 3rd or 4th fight. A 12th level sorc will pretty much always have *something* useful to do. The warlock might have a few more options by that point, but not too many more. Further, the higher-level powers are significantly weaker than a sorc gets at the same levels. I mean a 14th level sorc. is getting his pick of 7th level spells. A warlock is maybe getting an improved 4th level spell. Even the "dark" abilities are fairly weak. I've not played at this high a level, but it is somewhat noticable even at 8th level.

I've heard others say the class becomes a "battlefield control" class with the walls and the like. I don't really see it, but....

IMX sorcerers are very weak until they reach 6th level, start getting exciting at 8th level and from 10th level onwards rock on toast. I love 'em! Unparalleled tactical flexibility.

The warlock is very, very powerful at lower levels, where the unlimited touch attack blasts are really good, but later, when the casters have enough slots to last through the day, the sorcerer becomes a lot more powerful.

Would it be out of question to suggest allowing the warlock in a, generally, core campaign to replace the sorc?

They are completely different. Where's the problem to allow both?

I'd just pick the one you think would be more fun to play for you! :D

I'm playing both currently, and they are both fun, altho the warlock is really repetitive compared even to the sorcerer. ;)
