Sorcerer/Wizard PrC's?

Hmmm.

Benben's hazy recollection seemed reasonable to me... I'm concerned that Andargor's actual class is seriously overpowered, though.

Item Creation and Spell Research is not a huge minus for a class like this, I think. The metamagic is a shame... but you can end up at 20th level with a Caster Level of 18 as both a wizard and a cleric, or a sorcerer and a druid, or whatever.

That's 9th level spells in 2 classes.

Benben's version, however, would allow a wizard/sorcerer to have a caster level combination of 13/12 or 12/15 - 7th or 8th level spells with one class, and 6th with the other.

Or a wizard/cleric with 15/13 - 8th and 7th respectively.

It's still powerful... but you're sacrificing those 9th level spells, and a whole lot more points of Spell Penetration etc.

I don't think I'd ever allow the "real" class... but I might be convinced to allow Benjen's version (with all the skill prerequisites and limitations intact).

Maybe my mind still being hazy but here are my calculations.

The spellcraft limitation means that a character will qualify by 4th level. This gives two possible caster level combinations: 3/1 or 2/2.

Add ten levels of arcanist and we have caster level 13/11 or 12/12. This is a 14th level character.

This gives us six more levels to play with. This is a lot more combinations but let's look at maxed: 18/12, balanced: 15/15, spell level optimixed: 17/13.

So 9th level spells are possible but only in one class. The optimixed mix gives 9th and 7th, and the balanced build gains access to 8th level spells in both classes.

If you'll let me continue out my thought experiment:

Assuming: Cleric 9/Wizard 1/ Arcanist 10.
BAB: +11.
Saves: F +9, R +6, W +11.
HP: 9D8+11D4 an average of 68.

The above is the best possible BAB and clerical turning.

Assuming: Cleric 5, Wizard 5, Arcanist 10
BAB: +10
Saves: F +6, R +3, W +9
HP: 5D8+15D4 an average of 60

Those saves hurt to look at.

Assuming: Wizard 7, Cleric 3, Arcanist 10
BAB: +8
Saves: F +6, R +4, W +9
HP: 17D4 + 3D8 an average of 56

The above is our optimized arcane caster.

Assuming: Cleric 7, Wizard 3, Arcanist 10
BAB: +11
Saves: F +7, R +4, W +9
HP: 7D8 + 13D4 an average of 64

This is a very good prestige class but it's not the best one out there.

My gut instict tells me to give it a 2-3 worthless feat requirements and call it good.

This is a rules lawyer viewpoint, but the Eldritch Master from the Dragon Magazine Issue on Sorcerers (it also had the stats for the D&D Movie chars) gives its caster level bonus to all arcane classes if I recall right.

It's Dragon #280, p.88-89

It doesn't seem to grant Wizard spell progression. Actually, it's a really funky spell progression...

I've found a description here .

Hurm...It seems like such an interesting multi-class combination, it's just that it's so weak powerwise to do a split level sorcerer/wizard that you can't really pull your weight in the average party. I had hoped that more companies would have tried to address this and do something to make it more viable. I mean they did it for rogue/casters with the arcane trickster and they didn't even really need it yeesh.

Well here's hoping they tweak the multiclassing rules concerning caster level and whatnot in 3.5.

Oni, just wait a few more months. Any company seeing this "new" idea being successful will bring their own prestige classes with a similar system for spellcaster multiclassing...
