Sorcerers rock... so do wizards
Myself, I am a BIG TIME D&D player, so big that I have taken several tests and figured out MY OWN ability scores, and created myself as a character in D&D 3E, Star Wars, Wheel of Time, and (lately) d20 Modern. On a whim, I created myself as a wizard instead of the rogue/ranger that I really am (I focused on kidney shots and pressure points for the first fifteen years of my life, and then sorta started loving the outdoors, fighting with two weapons, etc.). And it's pure coincidence that I ended up so close to D&D classes. The first time I read rogue/ranger when I first started playing D&D a few years ago, I could only say "that's me..."
Well, back to the topic way back there, for a FRCS campaign I played myself as a wizard who picked up shadow adept as early as possible, went straight shadow adept up to 10th-level, then started levels in ninja of the crescent moon. Frankly speaking, I kicked ass. Other than that, I've never played a wizard. And I love them already.
Now I've played sorcerers. A lot of sorcerers. My OWN ability scores make either an optimum choice (Int and Cha both 17), but I prefer playing a more spontaneous character myself. I also discovered a neat trick. The Arcane Preparation feat allows a sorcerer to choose to prepare spells beforehand. Its main use is for metamagic feats, but I discovered a greater use. It allows the sorcerer to qualify for Mage of the Arcane order. I now have the only sorcerer in the organization, and he is known simply as The Sorcerous Regent. If your DM allows it, you could do the same thing with FR guildmages. Now the main advantage with this is that the sorcerer's spell slots are essentially ALL unprepared spells, and now the sorcerer has the spellpool, giving him access to any spell, given a relatively insignificant time. And he can pay off the spellpool debt a lot easier. All the advantages of the sorcerer and wizard in one, excepting feats, since the prestige class only grants TWO bonus. Still, it's an advantage over the normal sorcerer who gets 0 bonus feats.
One more big point for sorcerers. "You can steal my component pouch (I have the ability to 'Eschew Materials'), but I neither have nor need a spellbook to be stolen!"
All in all, I'd rather play a sorcerer, but understand that the two classes are just as powerful, just in a different style.
