Sound help, please.

I've got a sorta hybrid Hewlett Packard running Windows XP, with a CD writer from the era of Win98. My CDs aren't playing properly. I can read data CDs just fine, but whenever the drive plays an audio CD, it eventually screws up and kills all the sound on my computer. I don't know why this happens, but if any of you do, and can help me fix it, I'll be greatly indebted.

Can you describe 'the screw up and kill' part?

Recent example: I was listening to a CD, and then the sound stopped working.

That's about it.

Yeah, I know, I'm not helping much.

Um, afterward, occasionally whenever the computer tries to play a new sound, such as with an MP3 or when I log off my computer, I get maybe a half-second of sound before it goes silent again.

I can try to change tracks, stop and restart the song, whatever; it doesn't help. Only when I restart the computer does it reset. The problem doesn't seem to be a glitch with playing any particular track, or in any particular program. I've had this problem with lots of different CDs, played through both Win Media Player and Winamp.

And it's not just the CD player, because all sounds stop, not just ones from the CD.

That's all I know.

Couple things...

1. If it is a PCI soundcard - not a sound card that is integral to the system board - reslot it. (physically remove it - then put it back in).

2. Find out if there are newer drivers availble for it - if so - download and install them.

Let me know if this helps...
