Southern California GenCon? Definite maybe!

Everyone is forgetting the "other" bonus to GenCon So-Cal...

You can make it a family outing... send the wife & kids to Disneyland (or Knott's Berry Farm or Six Flags Magic Mountain - all well within driving distance of LA, Anaheim, or San Diego though Magic Mountain is a stretch from SD). :)

Quality time with the family to appease the wife AND get to go to GenCon. What could be better?

You also have, (in San Diego itself) Seaworld, The "World Famous San Diego Zoo", The Wild Animal Park, and its slew of beaches. And just a more pleasent/easier place to let the Wife and Kids (if they don't game) go and have fun.

Wow! My having moved to LA/Pasadena is looking better and better all the time. I love this place!!

Hey cool. I grew up in Pasadena. I lived on South Grand near the corner of Fair Oaks & Orange Grove. Whereabouts are you?

Have you been to Rick's Burrito on Walnut? Order a bean and cheese burrito and tell them to put french fries inside the burrito (not to be confused with the spuderito which is not the same and is generally inferior). It's not on the menu but people order it often enough that it might as well be. You won't regret it! Plus, it's a complete lunch for under $2. $3 with a drink.

Personally, I think it should be held in either Los Angeles or Anaheim, rather than San Diego. San Diego already has one world class convention... the Comic-Con. As there is a bit of a crossover between comic book fans and gamers, it might force people to choose attendance of one over the other, since they probably won't be willing to schedule two trips down to San Diego, no matter how lovely of a town it is. Plus, for what is effectively a brand new convention, Gen Con West will have a tough time filling the immense halls of the Convention Center.

On the other hand, the Greater Los Angeles area has (at least) three potential sites for the So Cal Gen Con: The Los Angeles Convention Center, the Convention Center complex that boders Disneyland in Anaheim, and any one of a number of hotels that ring Los Angeles International Airport. (I myself am partial to the Airport idea, seeing as how I already attend lesser gaming conventions there, plus I live within a few minutes travel time.)

Hopefully, L.A. will get the Gen Con. I wrote a long letter to help convince them, and if all goes well, I'll see you guys next November right here in my hometown of Los Angeles.

Doc

Well if not San Diego, then not Down-town LA. Anihiem or LAX would be fine.

But alot will realy depend on "who is the cheapest" then who is conveint.

As it is, I am stoked about it. I could actauly attend one with not much grief.

Isn't it cool? Did you ever visit the Game Zone on Colorado? You're the one who asked for suggestions on game stores in Pasadena, right?

Sorry - I know you actually asked Doc, but I live in South Pasadena right near the intersection of Fair Oaks and Mission right near the Bristol Farms. Cool area - I recently moved here from Old Town Pasadena after I got married.

Have you been to Rick's Burrito on Walnut?

Walnut and what cross-street?

To come back on topic: I think the convention in Southern California is a great idea, too. As someone suggested, Anaheim, Los Angeles, and San Diego are probably the best places.

Actually, let's just keep it in Los Angeles so we don't have to go behind the "Orange Curtain" to get to Anaheim. [shudder...]

I've been to the Game Zone! That's the place with all of the computers, right? As an LA native, I'd love Gen Con SoCal. However, as a college student, I'd like it to be over the summer (or maybe during my winter break) so that I can actually go.

LA has perfect weather, so a winter convention would probably work well. I'm sure that LA would have the space. Our transportation is bad, but as an LA resident I'm used to it so it's bearable.

(Wow, small world, I grew up in SouthPas near the intersection of Orange Grove and Mission. I shop at Gamezone when I'm in the area sometimes too).

How many people would come from out of town or nearby states to turn this new west coast con into a major event? I know I'd be willing to drive to either San Diego or S.F. to give a "GenCon" sized convention a shot.

Aside from the name recognition (Gencon West or whatever) and possibly the number of sponsors/companies in attendance, I'm wondering what would make this new convention any more grandiose or popular than the 3 yearly cons that we already have here in L.A. (OrcCon, Gamex, Gateway) for example? Or what would make it any better?

I think that a GEN CON So Cal is not only a wonderful idea, but also it’s long overdue. I agree that LA and SD are both excellent locations for such an event. I am curious about how many people would show, I mean there has to be a huge amount of west coast gamers who would love to have gone to GEN CON but were prohibited by the distance.

I think GenConSoCal is a great idea.

I'd like to throw my vote in for Anaheim. I honestly think that they'd be better because that city is designed for tourists! There is a cheap/moderate/fancy hotel/motel on practically every corner. The city itself is very family oriented and also is tourist friendly.

Personally, I think L.A. is a bad choice because of it's lack of tourist/traveller friendliness. If you don't know where your going and exactly WHEN you should leave to beat rush hours your going to get stuck in traffic.

oh well, I don't care where it goes so long as it's in So Cal :D
