Space: 1999 Coming From Modiphius

Space 1999 RPG.webp

The Space: 1999 Roleplaying Game will allow you to join the crew of Moonbase Alpha! Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds, Joe 90, and so much more) in 1975, the British show told the story of a moonbase after a nuclear explosion throws the moon into deep space. The game is written by Andrew Peregrine (Dune) and Modiphius Entertainment, and is powered by Modiphius' 2d20 system.

At first I misread this as Space 1889, thought the old GDW game was back (again).

I never got to see the original run of Space 1999, save for one (scary) episode where the back of the Eagle got turned into some crew-devouring Lovecraftian nightmare. And the episode with the planet where even the grass was sentient.

I tried to go back and watch it ... and it didn't click with me. I wouldn't mind playing a game of this if it was offered to me, but its not something I would run out to get. Not without some major attempts to modernize the storylines.

I'd be more interested in a Black Hole RPG (set in the same universe, but not necessarily trying to be the crew of the Palomino or hunting for the Cygness), and I've been saying for years that movie would really benefit from a 2010's-style remake.

I really liked Simon & Simon and caught most of the series in rerun during the early 1990s.
Holy Neilsen ratings Batman. I'd never have thought that show lasted 8 seasons, 1981-1989. There's a lot of shows like that, that I remember being on at some point, but didn't realize they were as long as they were, and I don't remember any specific episodes. I watched Hunter with the Rams Fred Dryer for a long time in the 80s and (maybe 90s) but don't remember a single episode, same with Miami Vice, and how is there not a Miami Vice RPG by now?

There's a kickstarter for a legally distinct Miami Vice type game and while I can't name any, I remember seeing quite a few indies that aim for that neon light, sockless vibe.
You don't say? How many coke dealers can you bust before it gets too boring after 3rd level,? Unless Mr. T and/or Rick James shows up?

Eh, not my specific cup of tea. But maybe this will open the door for more games. Thunderbirds. Captain Scarlet, maybe.

Oh, Lavender Castle would make a great TTRPG! "We must find the City at Center of the Universe before Duke Umbra does or he'll reshape all of reality in his twisted image" (note: while the proper nouns are inaccurate, that IS the basic plot). That sounds like a campaign I would cobble together.

For anyone curious: here's a comprehensive overview of the ENTIRE Anderson output (warning: it's nearly four hours long. These guys were prolific).

The Eagle was one of the coolest ship designs from that era. Maybe only surpassed by the Liberator.

Also, huge fan of The Black Hole. Used the design of the masked crew for a long-running NPC in a D&D game. Come to think of it, I was using music from the movie in my game last night!
