I would like to make a character that uses a longspear (or pike) and a shield - mainly because I have a miniature that I really like :)

How does one do this in D&D 3.5 rules-wise? (the Monkey Grip feat has been changed to talk about wepaon sizes  rather than using a 2-handed weapon in one hand).

If you don't mind going outside the core rules, the Nyambe setting book has a weapon called the "leaf-spear" that would probably fit your requirements.

Well, if you are matching an image, in this case a miniature, maybe the character is using a long spear, rather than a "longspear". The game version of the longspear is a reach weapon, so I would think that spears of up to as much as ten feet long might still be considered "spears".
A miniature that is like a Hoplite, with a spear even longer than that, would still be tough, I guess. The notion of such a spear as an individual weapon strikes me as odd, though. I think Hoplites or any other pikemen were able to use those weapons in a formation. The idea of someone lugging one around and trying to fight someone with a sword or a practical spear with it (in one hand especially!) doesn’t seem very convincing.
I thought the hoplite "type" was consciously added to 3rd ed., actually. The breastplate strikes me as quite explicitly the Hoplite, and not much else. Shield, shortsword, and a couple of spears, and you are there.

Sorry, tangent. Call it a spear, that is my point. They can be quite long, I think.

Doesn't the Wield Oversized Weapon feat from Complete Warrior have something to do with 2-handed to 1 hand with a -2 penalty or something? Maybe it's one of the epic feats, but IDHMBWM...

Has the idea of a Small Longspear been floated up yet?

A Medium character wields a small Longspear as a 1-h reach weapon, with some penalties, unless there has been a change I'm not aware of (in which case I will revoke my suggestion : ) )

Why wouldn't you use a shortspear instead of this?

If you've found a mini that meets your needs in such a satisfying way, lie, cheat or steal to make your dream come true. That said, until you show us said mini, I suspect the fellow is actually carrying a shortspear. Unless he's a LotR mini or some such insanity.
