Special Conversion Thread: Supernatural Familiars

I fixed the extranneous "baltir".

Let's drop either Common or Terran, as the others have only 2 or 3 languages. Quasits have 2 languages; imps have 3 languages, but lack Common.

Of the many orrekin that dwell on the plane of Concordant Opposition, few come to the material plane. When they do, they prefer to remain as inconspicuous as possible. Each orrek can take on three forms from the following list: salmon, owl (large), fox, and squirrel. In salmon form, the animal can move in fresh or salt water. In its own shape, the orrek can burrow through rock or soil as quickly as an umber hulk. Other barriers may not stop it either, since it can assume gaseous form once per day for up to 4 turns. This power works as the potion, but it applies only to the orrek, not to any personal effects it may be carrying. The orrek can also trip, summon insects, and produce flame, once per day each, no matter what form the creature is in; however, the latter two powers will not function underwater (when the creature is in salmon form), and even trip might not work as intended, although it could still be attempted underwater.

Only magical weapons, or those made of greenstone, can hit an orrek. “Greenstone” is any green rock that’s hard enough to be made into a weapon -- usually an inferior grade of jade.

Orrekin are devoted to balance; they tolerate other forces as long as none of them show signs of dominance. Orrekin believe chaos is foolish, law is pretentious, and good or evil is just a waste of time. An orrek’s general form looks human, but its body is squat and muscular, with rounded shoulders and long arms. Its hands are large and tipped with iron-hard, retractable claws. Orrekin are covered with short, soft fur, which is usually gray but may also be brown or black. Their glittering black eyes, short necks, broad teeth, and rather narrow heads suggest kinship to a rodent.

But if this appearance evokes any negative reaction, this is usually soothed by the orrek’s lively manner and pleasant, if simple, way of speaking.

Ditch the greenstone bit, I guess, so DR/magic. We've got gaseous form and produce flame as SLAs, and I guess summon insects can be summon swarm. Did we do a trip Sp or Su sometime? Seems familiar. Should we just let them all have all 4 alternate forms?

Trip as a ranged supernatural or SLA does ring a bell.

I'd be OK giving them all four alternate forms. Do we have stats for all of them? If not, a salmon's just a Swim speed, the owl's in the SRD, a Fox could use a small dog's stats and a squirrel is more or less a rat statwise (they just have better PR).

What ability scores do you fancy.

They're Very (11-12) intelligent, so Int 12 seems pretty obvious.

There's little in the description to suggest their other stats, except they're squat and powerful build suggests a fairly respectable Strength, and they are described as stealthy and fairly charismatic.

Maybe take a Tabur's ability scores and move a couple of points from Wisdom to Intelligence?

Abilities: Str 10, Dex 15, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 13

Looks pretty good, except maybe shift some from Dex to Str as you mentioned the powerful build:

I wondered about suggesting Strength 12, but thought it may be a bit too meaty if we're keeping them Tiny like the Tabur - they'd be Str 18 if Medium sized. Plus, a Tabur is presumably pretty buff, being a pseudo-monk and all.

Still, I am still tempted by Str and Dex in the 12-13. If they take on the stats of a Dog when in Fox-form, then how about giving them a Dog's Str 13?

Abilities: Str 13, Dex 13, Con 10, Int 12, Wis 12, Cha 13

All that sounds good.

Added to Homebrews.

We'll need to stat up the salmon, unless you can direct me to another similarly-sized fish somewhere in the SRD.

I left the tabur's tiny hare form as a placeholder for the salmon writeup.

I think all four alternate forms sound reasonable, as these guys lack flight and some of the other advanced powers of the other types.

I'll see if I can locate that trip ability. If not, I believe we just said "as the combat maneuver function of telekinesis, but only for trip attacks".
