Special Conversion Thread: Supernatural Familiars

The shaken, then charmed gaze at will is pretty powerful for a familiar-worthy creature. But then again, psuedodragons have fantastically good poison, so I dunno.

Another insanity thing. Last time it was the mapmaker, and we gave those confusion, right? I'm thinking shaken might be appropriate here, but a gaze attack is still more serious than any of the other familiars. Perhaps it takes a standard action and targets a specific individual, like a vampire's dominating gaze?

That seems a good approach. Do we want to limit it to a number of times per day?

Something like this, then?

Malevolent Gaze (Su): A durocib can unsettle an opponent simply by looking onto his or her eyes. This is similar to a gaze attack, except that the durocib must take a standard action, and those merely looking at it are not affected. Anyone the durocib targets must succeed on a DC X Will save or be shaken for xdx rounds. A creature that fails its save must make a second DC X Will save or fall instantly under the durocib's influence as though by a charm person spell from a xth-level caster. The ability has a range of 30 feet. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Looks a good start, except there's no mention of the range limit to maintain control. How about:
Malevolent Gaze (Su): A durocib can crush an opponent's will simply by looking into their eyes. This is similar to a gaze attack with a 30 foot range, except that the durocib must take a standard action and its malevolent gaze only affects a single target, those merely looking at it are not affected. Whoever the durocib targets must succeed on a DC X Will save or be shaken for xdx rounds. A creature that fails its save must make a second DC X Will save or fall instantly under the durocib's influence as though by a charm person spell from a xth-level caster, except the charm effect immediately ends if the durocib is ever further than 30 feet from its victim. The save DC is Charisma-based.

To keep it in line, we could reduce shaken to frightened or just keep the duration to 1 round. We can also limit # of times per day or say that it can't use the gaze while it's keeping someone charmed.

Added to Homebrews.

No speed was given, so I gave it the same as a monkey.

Usually slow and deliberate in its movements, the durocib is capable of sudden darts and lunges, and has an uncanny ability to sense the intent of an enemy an instant before the enemy takes any action. Because of this characteristic, the durocib makes saving throws as a 7th-level thief. The creature has in addition a number of thieflike abilities, all performed with the same chance of success as a 7th-level Halfling thief. They can move silently, hide in shadows, climb walls, and detect traps; the latter ability is limited to snares and pits only. Because of their keen senses, durocibs are never surprised and can surprise others on a 1-4. Though they are clever with bolts and latches and can use simple tools, durocibs are unable to become skilled with weapons.

It sounds like a racial bonus on Climb, Disable Device, Hide, Move Silently, Open Lock, and Search checks, uncanny dodge (and possibly evasion), and Improved Initiative and Lightning Reflexes as bonus feats.

Updated.

I added trap sense as well, since it was evident in the original text, but I forgot to mention it earlier.

Suggested amount for the racial skill bonuses?

Duration for shaken effect and suggested caster level equivalent for the charm portion of malevolent gaze?
