Special Conversion Thread: Unicorns

I also agree that they're definitely primers and shouldn't have those subtypes.

For SLAs: I also don't like magic circle. Silence I guess needs to be an Su aura (I like the continuous SLA thing Pathfinder has going), so that looks good. I'd prefer to keep darkness as an SLA, but I don't think darkness can target a creature, so I guess that also has to be a unique ability. Let's make it Sp, though. The suggested change to teleport more often is good.

On abilities: I like the slightly increased Str. Con should probably stay the same. Int is the same, so keep all mental stats the same as the regular unicorn? Dex maybe stays the same, too.

It is explicitly not extraplanar, so no evil and extraplanar subtypes. They need light blindness.

Oops, they weren't kidding when they talked about "confusion with the outer-planes monster".

I do not like the suggestion of them always radiating a magic circle vs. good, nor the seperation of their darkness aura and darkness SLA.

Well I just find it a bit odd that a magical creature with an association with darkness can produce silence more often than shadows.

I'm not that attached to the notion, although I quite like the circle vs good for them. They're a nasty venomous dark-lurking Chaotic Evil unicorn, so I think it fits. (There is another evil unicorn in that Dragon magazine, the LE cold-using Palomino, who might also qualify for a protection from good power.)

Well, as noted, we already need to convert darkness to a unique ability, so it can target itself. We could just increase the frequency if everyone wants.

Those SLAs look a fair compromise.

The saves are off - should be Fort +10, Ref +8, Will +7. I'm guessing you just forgot to adjust the base Unicorn for the extra 2 HD.

Also the horn's damage should be "2d8+8 plus paralysis".

Speaking off paralysis, shall we modify the Ghast version?

Paralysis (Ex): Those hit by a dark unicorn's horn attack must succeed on a DC 20 Fortitude save or be paralyzed for 1d4+1 rounds. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Hmm, the Unicorn's impressive Charisma would give that rather a high DC. Methinks we'd be better off switching to Con-based, which lowers the DC a couple of points.

Paralysis (Ex): Those hit by a dark unicorn's horn attack must succeed on a DC 18 Fortitude save or be paralyzed for 1d4+1 rounds. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Paralysis looks good, and Con-based makes more sense since it is a living creature.

Updated.

What about this?

*Dark unicorns have a +3 competence bonus on Survival checks made in x environments.

Normal (sylvan) unicorns and alicorns have forest environments, while bay unicorns have underground environs. For dark unicorns, should we change it to "areas of darkness"?

I'm OK with "Dark unicorns have a +3 competence bonus on Survival checks made in areas of darkness." but I'm not very comfortable putting it in their Environment line as well.

How about Environment: Dark forests or underground instead?

Sounds good.
