Necromancy is always the easy toss-off, ala "No Dark Arts."

I dig Necromancy, always have... however if you're going to be a "Necromancer" you should be a Cleric... faster Animate Dead and some awesome necromantic spells such as Unliving Weapon (BoVD)

Depends on what idea I'm going for, but generally speaking.

If I'm doing the diviner I'll usually give up necromancy. Sure you lose out on Ray of Enfeeblement, Blindness/Deafness, Spectral Hand, Enervation, etc., but if you're making information your business you don't really want to give up enchantment or illusion as they compliment divination's ability to gather intel nicely.

If I'm another kind of specialist, I'll usually give up two out of either necromancy, illusion, or enchantment. Such as if I'm an evoker or conjurer, your real direct reigns-o'-power battlemage type, I'll give up enchantment and illusion because they're 'soft' disciplines. That sort of idea. Stay within concept for what schools go. *nod*

My first instinct is to keep illusion to make use of its defensive spells (mirror image, invisibility, and, of course, greater invisibility). And things like major image can be great in confusing the enemy.

However the more I look illusions the more willing I am to give up that school. What's the point of making a major image of a monster to scare the enemy and waste his resources/actions attacking it when you can conjure a creature to do the same, or just blast him directly? That's not to say that illusion is a terrible school (it's certainly much better than enchantment, in my opinion), but it lacks a certain *umph* to it, and it really depends a lot on the DM on how powerful the spells are.

There can be a lot of confusion and dissenting opinions on illusions and what counts as interacting with them etc. I'd rather go with the tried and true fireball; nobody in their right mind argues about what 5d6 damage means.

A related follow-up poll to specialist wiz thread. Identify the two schools you dump in favor of a specialization.

(And just in case I screw up the poll creation somehow ... Well, if you can only pick one, then pick the easiest choice.)

No cheating -- two only.
Sorry, I cheated, didn't read the post. Shame on me.

I voted Necromancy, Illusion and Enchantment. Either school has a few nice spells, but I think it is easy to give up on all of them. All other spells contain to many spells that provide generally useful abilities.
If I could get some cool special ability for it, I'd probably willing to give up all 3 schools...
