Specify attack method? How strict

I would generally go "you know that'll provoke an OA right?"

But, you say you've corrected him earlier in the game? What on, OA's he was provoking and suchlike?

And when he's been correcting you, has he been correct?

You are technically in the right in the described case, but that's not really what matters. What matters is; can you play with this guy, and have fun?

Yeah we've been friends for years, more like a good natured argument that he wasn't happy to lose

I clarified his attack several times before this and on previous sessions

He was 1/2 correct on one rule, but only because it didn't go his way the way we were playing it. (Wake from camp when they got attacked, I made them do a check to awake from their deep sleep, he kept failing and I wouldn't let anyone else wake him up which is legal in the rules. He was never hit or attacked)

Other times he was incorrect (4 - 5 times) so this was kind of a "you know the rules then you should know how to switch weapons and do a basic attack"

Did you really need a rule for this: why WOULDN'T people be able to wake him up? (Not for free perhaps, but with an action?)

I would see this as far worse than him questioning rules too often, you kept him out of a scene for a reason that didn't make logical sense. Why?

I would say that you were wrong there. You can make a Perception roll, with minuses, to wake up from a sleep but something as simple as another character shouting can wake you up.

"An ally can wake you up by shaking you (a standard action) or by shouting (a free action)."

That's automatic, requiring no roll.

yeah I know, the group got ambushed, only one person woke up and immediately he started complaining that he should be awake right away because one player woke up, everyone else woke up on their turn, he failed the wake up check and then started complaining more, the battle was over in 3 turns, so he just slept through it. Overall it was pretty amusing

The second time reminding him that he is wielding a ranged weapon at the same session I would say" Now, sorry about this, but this is going to be the last time I remind you today/tonight."

If he does it twice 2 sessions in a row I would say at the beginning of the next session "I will no longer be reminding you that you are about to provoke an opportunity attack."

BTW "An eye for an eye, makes the whole world pirates"

No one shouted?

That's rather darkly humorous.

"Shhh, let's keep the fight quiet so we don't wake up our allies!"

"...but he could contribute!"

"Yeah, but he was real tired last night, I think he'd appreciate the sleep."

This *sort* of thing happened often to us in 3.5. If the fight looked to be minor, we would keep our casters asleep so they could get their full rest and all that.

You did gyp him out of the combat, and he had a right to be bugged about it. Just the noise of battle should have lowered the Perception DC to an auto-win level.

he actually rolled so low I couldn't possibly make it a win, his first roll was like a 2, then he was like screw it I'll just sleep through and rolled a 1 anyway.

I'm guessing it was pretty annoying to him though?

I can understand that it'd be annoying/amusing for you to have him getting angry about not being awake but can you understand that by not letting him be woken up by his allies (I'm assuming at least one of them asked to, because of what you said earlier) you're encouraging antagonistic behaviour?

It seems like you really need to sit down with this guy and work out what the problems are, before going back to gaming. Because he's not having fun when you keep him out of a scene, and you're not having fun when he complains about the rules...

EDIT: And given as you have seriously screwed him over with regards to the rules at least once, it's not like he's unjustified in continually trying to point to rules that help him.
